Kim S. Orlando Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 9, 2005.
Despite his high rank, Lt. Col. Kim S. Orlando never hesitated to lead his soldiers personally, whether on a three-mile run in below-freezing temperatures or on patrol in the streets of Karbala. Chaplain Maj. Steve Turner recalled one particular run on a frigid January morning. Shorts only _ no warmup pants; jackets were optional. "We got to the line; the whistle blew. And Col. Orlando led the pack," Turner said. "He led by example." Orlando, 43, was one of three Fort Campbell soldiers killed Oct. 16 in a clash with gunmen guarding the headquarters of a Shiite cleric in Karbala in southern Iraq. Orlando, a native of Nashville, Tenn., enlisted in the Army as a military policeman in 1982 and was commissioned in 1986. Survivors include his wife, Sherry, who works in the public affairs office at Fort Campbell, Ky., and two sons.

Hello,

We apologize for being so late in expressing our deepest condolences to you and your family. We want you to know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo, service branch, rank and hometown of Kim S. Orlando US Army Lieutenant Colonel.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families, friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,

RIP Kim. You will be surely missed. I would like to have Sherry contact me as I want to share many great memories I have of being his roommate and stationed with him in Kornwestheim Germany in the early 80's.

Kim and I grew up together in Nashville. I lost touch with him after we graduated from high school. Just before his last deployment, we spoke on the phone, reminisced about our childhoods and he invited me to visit him at Fort Campbell and have a cup of coffee. He was a fine person and I miss him.

Over 1,850 portraits have been completed and shipped to the parents and or spouse - at no cost as this is a gift from one American to another!
This is a gift! We have some wonderful sponsors who help with the costs, and only want you know that we care.

In Memory of Kim ~ (Debra Estep)

October 16, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Kim, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Lt Col Orlando. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that Lt Col knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience, and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Lt Col Orlando!

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I was saddened to hear of the loss of LTC Kim Orlando. I worked with then SP4 Orlando many times while he was an enlisted soldier with the 300th MP Co in Stuttgart Germany. He was a very professional soldier, who always had time to share his knowledge and skills with his fellow soldiers. He will be very much missed.

I knew Kim when he was SPC Kim S. Orlando, at the 300th MP Co, in the Ludwigsburg-Kornwestheim Military Community in Germany in 1984. I was a brand new private in Kim's squad. He took me under his wing and trained me to really work the road while on patrol. I was really saddened when I heard of his death, my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

I first met LTC Orlando and his beautiful family when stationed at SHAPE, Belgium. Kim and his family were the real deal. By this I mean their love for each other, their country and Saviour Jesus Christ was genuine. The word integrity best described this wonderful gentleman and our nation lost a great warrior, patriot, and friend. May the Lord continue to bring his wife and boys continued peace and comfort.

Lt.Col. Orlando words cannot even begin to express the great sorrow our battalion felt when we lost such a great leader. I was honored each time you came around to tell the soldiers in the battalion how great they were and brought us so much motivation. Sir you will always be remembered as a great leader and one who cared about his soldiers. Thank you, Sgt. Greg Moore, 3rd Plt "Bushmasters" 551st Military Police Company, Fort Campbell, Ky.

Lt Colonel Orlando and I met and exchanged unit coins at Camp Pendleton, California the Summer of 2002. I like many of my fellow Marines were impressed by his professionalism and I like many others were deeply saddened when he lost his life as a Military Policeman in Iraq. The coin that he gave me of his US Army Military Police Battalion is my most treasured momento. Kim, may God Bless You thru eternity. You are missed and will never be forgotten.

I was a 2nd Lt assigned to the 101st MP Company under the command of then CPT Orlando. He was a great first commander. I served in OIF 1 as a Reservist. I was happy to see LTC. Orlando's name plate at the MP conference in Baghdad. He was too busy to attend. I was planning on visiting my long lost commander in late October 2003. We were all devastated to hear he was killed. He was a great man who loved Family, God and Country. He led from the front until the end. God Bless his family for his sacrifice allows us all to live free.

I went to OCS in 1986 with Kim and he was a nice, funny guy. He had good manners and was smart. He could really run and was very outgoing. He, another candidate and I had to navigate a land nav course once and it seemed to take forever. I can't even remember what we all three spoke about over the hours (it was a few years ago), but I had a favorable impression of Kim. When I read about his death I felt a real sense of loss, because I thought he was a good person, even all those years ago. I wanted to tell his family this all these years later. I don't know if this helps (does anything help at these times?), but he made a good impression on me, and sometimes in life that's about all we get with folks. God bless you.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!
