Brian Michael Clemens Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 14, 2005.
A graduate of Maconaquah High School, Brian was buried in Peru, Indiana. He was a member of 1-293d Infantry, Indiana Army National Guard, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Brian helped raise his younger sister, helped novice wrestlers learn the ropes, and helped his teachers with computer programs. "He was putting his time and energy back into the community," said Dennis Leffler, one of his high school wrestling coaches. "He was the kind of kid who wanted to make a difference." Clemens, of Kokomo, was the first Hoosier killed in the U.S. buildup to the war in Iraq when his Humvee overturned during a patrol at a base in Kuwait. The National Guard specialist was 19. An Eagle Scout, Brian joined the Guard to earn money for college. He hoped to study engineering at Purdue University.

Time is such a good healer but you are still very much missed. I think about you when I pass the memorial wall at the government center and I always stop and spend a moment to thank you all. I wonder what kind of person you would have continued to become. I am pretty sure I would've convinced you to work cyber. We were always good at convincing each other on what we all needed to do. We'd still be nerding out over coffee through the early morning hours. I'm glad our paths crossed and so thankful for time we all had with you. Your memory lives on and continues to inspire me to help others.

Rest well Brother. While reading over these memories, I had some time to self reflect. Brian you are missed every day. I know that in my younger years, I wasn't always the type to share feelings. I remember the ball, after returning that year. SGM Cox introduced me to your Parents and I totally shut down and walked away. I've regretted doing that ever since then. I can think of numerous situations in my life that I'd love to take a mulligan on, but this one stands out. Not a day goes by that you, Cpt Fiscus and MSgt Heister aren't thought of. Still to this day I can't help but wonder if it had been me instead. Love and miss you brother and keep the beer cold for us.

Since 2003, not a Veterans Day (or 6th of of February) has passed that I don't remember having to make Notification to SPC Clemons mother! Early in the Morning of the 7th of Feb 03, we recieved the call that we had to make the Notification. Making calls to verify the address, persons living at the address, etc. Going home immediately to prepare my Dress Uniform, and then having to get training, on the way to the Home, over the phone from Ft Knox on EXACTLY what to say (Three Written Paragraphs). It is a script that HAS to be repeated to the next of kin to the "T"! Remember getting out of the Truck, and walking to the door with tears in my eyes. As I was getting ready to knock on the door, it opened...the Step Father was at the door, and immediately behind him was Brian's Mother..as I was trying to get the rehearsed speech out, verify who I was talikng with, the screams and cries from Brian's Mother were terrifying. If you have EVER had a loved one deployed, and suddenly have a Military person, in Dress Uniform, show up at your door, you know what I mean...So this Veterans Day, I want us to thank those Family Members who have also payed the ultimate sacrafice by thanking them and providing WHATEVER support they NEED...SO...Cathy...Enjoy Veterans Day, and GOD BLESS YOU for what you have given!!!

”Honor and Remember” - “Project Compassion” We love our Soldiers! We love our country and we cannot express enough love and compassion to the families of our fallen heroes. War does not discriminate – It breaks our hearts to see the faces of the fallen. We want to give this gift to the hero’s Mother, Father and/or spouse. We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization! Almost 2,100 portraits have been completed and shipped to the parents and or spouse - at no cost as this is a gift from one American to another!
This is a gift! We have wonderful sponsors who help with the costs, and want you know that everyone here at Project Compassion does and will always CARE.
Contact us directly at [email protected] or go to www.heropaintings.com . If you have already had a portrait completed, we pray that you are enjoying the portrait and God Bless You.

While I served beside you in 2003 I can honestly say I didn’t know you all that well. But when you passed and left a hole within our company I got a chance to know you very well. A few years back I took over the Peru Armory and I kept telling myself Id visit your grave, but I could never do it. I’m sorry that I couldn’t bring myself to visit.
I have thought about you often. Today I sit in my office tasked with preparing a shadow box for the Fort Wayne armory in your honor as well as SGT Miller Brian who died this last deployment in a very familiar way.
Your loss is still felt deeply and you're still remembered by those of us that served beside you. As long as your memories live you to shall live.

It's been over 6 yrs and not a day goes by that i don't remember standing in the sand, stareing at your boots and wondering why God needed you more than we. Someday we will stand side by side in the ranks again. Until then, you just keep guarding that big gate and keep a close eye out for your friends and family.

My Husband served with Brian in Iraq, and not a day goes by that he does not wear his braclet remebering Brian. I kinda of think of it as his way of taking Brian through all the small and large things that go on in his life. Today on Memorial Day I want to thank him and those other soldiers like him that have given their lives for our country. To Brian's family, just know that there are many out there that will never forget your son. Thank You to all those that have served our country and still do.

I still have this flag.

Please know that just as your loved one will forever remain in your hearts and minds, his sacrifice and that of your family, will remain with the people he died defending. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for his bravery and selflessness, or the heartache we feel for your loss. God grant you the peace that passes all understanding.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

To the loved ones of Brian, I say that his life meant something to myself and to all those who sleep in freedom tonight. It does not say how he died not where but as a Combat Medic Serving in Iraq , I can tell that his life was not easy serving there. I would love to hear about this fellow Kokomoan and military brother who served and died in Iraq. May God bless any and all who loved and knew him.
