Eric M. Steffeney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 27, 2005.
Eric M. Steffeney was always curious about how things worked. As a boy, he took his bicycle apart; as a soldier, he disarmed explosive devices. "He was interested in everything," Annette Crowe said about her son. Steffeney, 28, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Feb. 23 when an explosive detonated in Tuz. He was based at Fort Bragg. In high school, Steffeney worked hard in class and on the school's football team. "I remember he was a good student, and more importantly, a good person," said Bob Weaton, Steffeney's former football coach and government teacher. Jamie Forsythe, one of Steffeney's childhood friends, said they spent hours together fishing for catfish on the Cedar River. One year, when the boys were about 13, they built a three-level tree fort in Forsythe's yard, he said. "It took us the whole summer," he said. Steffeney, a tall, stocky man, loved fishing, hunting and reading, his family said. He taught his children about gun safety and took the oldest two hunting for squirrel and deer. He is survived by his wife, Theresa, children Benjamin, 13, Dennis, 6, and Caitlin, 11.

Theresa and family, I cant even begin to know what you all have gone through and continue to go through. I know Eric watches down on you all and smiles. I only met him one time and Ill never forget how he was telling me all about the Army and I started telling him about the Marine Corps. It was like we got into a little competition. LoL We went back and forth. Now, that I think about it today, I laugh about how we both were goating each other and trying to prove one was better than the other. You all are always in my prayers! Hugs~ I Love you guys~

I still don't believe he is gone and it has been 15 years. He had such an infectious smile. It did not matter the day we were having in Iraq, he had a way of making you forget all your worries.

To the family of Staff Sgt. Eric M. Steffeney:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.

Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

February 18, 2012

Miss you bro!!! You helped pass the days during the time we crossed paths. Laughter is the best medicine, and you were the best Doctor for that. He was a great guy and made you laugh no matter the day you were having. I cannot believe it has been 7 years. Steff was the last person I talked to at FOB Bernstein as I made my travels home. He was dedicated to the mission and stopping the attacks on convoys. His life was cut way too short. I wish everyone could have known you.

Steff was a very professional soldier. He had a dry sense of humor, very funny and influential type of guy. He had a distinctive way about him that grew on you and others in his presence. He just had this likeable disposition about him that made him look and feel genuwine. This time of year is very emotional and trying for me. I was a very short distance away from Steff and the last person he talked to on that tragic day. I think of his family that he left behind everyday and the bravery he displayed that day and I commend him and am indebted to him every day for saving my life...SSG Steffeney thank you for your valor, you will never be forgotten.

My brother, may peace be with you. I served with Eric in the late 1990s at Fort Carson, Colorado. He was waiting to go to EOD school. I remember the day he shot a hole through a quarter at 30 meters with open sights with his M-16. I liked him from that day on. He was a good friend and a damn good person. I couldn't believe what happened when I first heard about this. We didn't spend a lot of personal time together back at Fort Carson, but I will always remember him! My blessings go out to his family and friends. Noone is ever truely gone, as long as they are remembered! Take care my fiend, our thoughts will always be with you.

Eric, I love you and I miss you so much... Not a day goes by that I don't think about you. It has been two years and still I often wonder, "why did it have to be you". You were the most amazing man I have ever known and I will never understand why you were taken from us so quickly.
It is because of you that I became the person I am today. You were never critical but always supportive and even pushy at times, I would not have done half of the things I did in my life if not for you. I have never met anyone like you, I remember you saying " you can do it sugar, I know you can". It is because of your confidence in me that I remain strong enough to deal with losing you. You will live on in our hearts forever.
Those who loved Eric will always remember him for the unconditional love, the constant support he has shown us, and just the way he would look at things and say "everything will be fine". He had the most amazing smile, attitude, and personality. As for the kids and I he was the most important person in our lives. It is still difficult to get through each day,
How do you carry on when such a huge part of you is gone? I love you, honey, always...
Love,
me

I haven't written anything in here yet. I'm not that great with the written word. Eric was like the father I wished I always had. I never needed much in the way of right and wrong, I just needed someone there for me, just in case. And Eric was that person. That's what was so hard for me. But it's been a long time, life must go on, however difficult it is at times. We all know you would want us to remember you as the smiley friendly soldier who always put his family before anything else. Like I said, I'm not good with the written work, I jump around too much. So... Eric, your love for your family and loved ones will never be forgotten. I couldn't have had a better father.

Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “What Are We to Remember?” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,

Leila Campbell

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

I have tried a few times to sign this guestbook. But words never seemed like enough. Eric served at Fort Bragg with my husband. Matthew and I got married 8 days before he and Eric deployed the first time. Eric always asked me.....when are you and Chappy getting married? And then he would ask me to make him a peanut butter pie. I told him I would have one waiting for him when they got back from this last deployment. I will never forget the fact that I never got to make him that pie. There isn't a day go by that I don't think about Eric. I know the sacrifice he and his family have made for all of us. I know that on any given day during those months that could have been my husband and I feel guilty. I thought the world of Eric. I think the world of Theresa and her strength and courage. Matthew is now here at Eglin teaching the future EOD.......he says he is teaching them the right way, the safe way.....the Eric way. He said he saw Eric's class picture hanging on the Schoolhouse wall. Matthew speaks frequently of Eric these days. He loved him.........he was so easy to love because he was a wonderful man.......to all who came in contact with him.

Eric was a great uncle, and a wonderful person. He always took people for who they were. I remember him trying to give me advice on how to get a boys attention when I was staying with Theresa and him. He was always able to make people laugh, and he was a great father to all three of his kids. It will never be the same without him.

Eric was a great man, He did not deserve to die that way. I met Eric while deployed in Iraq at FOB Bernstein in Tuz. He always knew how to make you laugh and take your mind off the deployment. I will miss you greatly and know that you will always be remembered in my heart. Thank you for your dedication in this tough world.

Theresa, I can see in your face and hear in your laughter how much love Eric gave to you. And how truly happy and in love you are with him. Always hold on to that! It is a very special gift to have a love like that.

Although I was not close to Eric, I feel great compassion and pain for all of you. Months after his death my heart still weeps for you with great sadness. My hope for you, is that you can find some kind of solice in all The Greatness Eric is and was and the magnatude of appreciation we all have for what he did for each one of us every day. He will be missed profusely and loved profoundly forever. Eric is a hero!

I just want to thank everyone for all of the nice things you have added to this guest book, I am going to print out a copy of this and save it for the kids.

It has been almost 6 weeks now and the unit will be home today, for me this is excruciatingly painful... knowing that by all rights my husband should be coming home too. I miss Eric more than most of you can imagine. I'm not sure how I get from day to day... I guess I just keep waiting to "bounce" but haven't quite made it there yet. Jordan and Alexis are hanging tough, giving me the same hard time teenagers are supposed to give their parents. Blake on the other hand breaks my heart sometimes with the things he comes up with... The other night he asked me to write down the spell that Piper, Phoebe, & Paige use to summon Gramms. He put it under his pillow and put a picture of Eric beside him and went to sleep. The next morning he woke up and asked me "did Dad slept beside you" and when I said no, He told me, "Well he slept beside me". At least now I do know that Blake understands what's going on (at least somewhat).

I realize this posting is longwinded and personal, but I really need to try to find a way to deal.

Again I thank you all for your kind words, support, and prayers.

Sincerely,

Theresa

Eric, Honey, I will always love you and I miss you so much.

Love Always, ME

Theresa, I'm sorry about Eric. I know he was your lobster in life, he made you smile when no one else could, I remember your days of saddness many years earlier. Then Eric come to your life and that all changed you and the kids become a tremendous family, and your eyes glowed when you spoke of him, we met at family reunions, had brief conversations, you to belonged together you could see it. I'm proud that he served and protected all of us in this country, we are unable to do that ourselves. I hope you and Jordan, Alexis, and Blake will know that Eric was the Star in more peoples lives than anyone could even imagine, He is a Hero! My thoughts and Prayers are with all of you.

We are all better for having had Eric in our family even for such a short time. Erics' death has left a big hole in all our hearts. We will miss him very much. I served with Eric at the EOD shop at Bragg, and with him in Iraq in 2003. Eric was a great friend, and just a great guy! I have so many memories of the times we spent together. He could make the most hectic situation better, by his grin and a single word! Eric you are a true HERO and I miss you my friend!

I did not know Eric personally, but he was supporting my unit when he died. During his time at FOB Bernstein, he disarmed multiple IEDs, which saved many lives. Comments at the camp about Eric echo the comments in this guest book. He was a hero and a friend to all he encountered. Eric, thank you for saving the lives of Soldiers in my platoon. You will never be forgotten.

We have both known Eric since he was 15 years old. He was a very important person in our lives throughout his high school years. We remember all of the fun times we had when he would come over to our house, and loved watching him play football for the Wahawks! He was a quiet, sensitive, caring guy, and very loveable. We will miss him greatly, but we know he is watching out for all of us. Eric, we admire your bravery and dedication to our country, and love and miss you. Theresa, although we never got a chance to meet you, please know that our prayers are with you and your children. Annette, Lori, Gerald and Gary, our thoughts and prayers are with you too. It's nice to see the impact that Eric has had on so many lives. He is a really special guy. God bless you all.

I did not know Eric very well but I do know that he was the Lobster in Theresa's life. He is a very lucky man to have had the family that he has love him so much. To have that and to be admired for his work by his peers is a fortunate way of life itself. It sounds like in his line of work he knew life was full of risks and yet, he took advantage of time by laughing, loving, listening and teaching all of those around him. I regret that my cousin lost her great love but at the same time, I am grateful to Eric and to all the others who have sacrificed their families and their lives to protect ALL of us. They will always be Heroes in my eyes.

Eric I know you are listening somehow. I just wanted to tell you that I miss you and that you have meant a lot to my Mom and Dad, helping with the pond and cutting the grass. Even after serving in the military for 17 years, I still have a hard time understanding...why? It was easy for me to rationalize my life in the military, but I have a hard time rationalizing the loss of someone so young and someone so close to our family. I have know you but for a few years, but I guess I never really knew you, except by the way you did things, by the way you helped others and by the way you were around your family. For this I am grateful for the times we did meet at the family reunions or by the pond! Thank you!!! Theresa and kids, we love you and are praying for you. Let us help if we can! Love Zane

I wouldlike to send my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Steff. SSG Steff was an awesome guy and getting to know him while serving with him in Iraq was a great experience. I remember talking with him and finding out what it takes to be an EOD Tech. He is the one that has made me think of persuing the EOD feild. I did not know Eric but as a Marine EOD Tech with two Iraq deployments behind me;this loss is felt across the entire EOD field. My thoughts and prayer go out to his friends and family. God Bless you SSG Steffeney! May you rest in peace. I did not know you personally but you are a fellow EOD Tech. My symphathy goes to those left behind. The testimony of those who knew you speaks for itself. The world would be a much better place with more men like you.

Eric was my team leader for the last year and a half. He was the best team leader I have ever had and he was a great example to me, to work with him was a honor. I was stationed with Eric for the first four months in Iraq. And every time we got the call for a IED we would go to the HQ to get the info for what we had. When Eric walked in the door you could see a change come over the people. Because SSG Steffeney was there and he was going to make every thing right again. As I continue through the EOD field I hope that I can take all that he taught me and become a better tech and a better Man. Eric was My friend, my mentor.

March 9, 2005

I met Eric in EOD school. What a great guy. He always seemed to know when to throw you one of his mischievous grins to let you know everything was going to be OK. I wish that I could have worked with him more often in the field. I sure will miss the big lug. Rest in peace my brother.

Marc Babicz

March 9, 2005

The time I was able to spend with Eric was short, but in that short time on the water and in the classroom he was able to teach me as much if not more than I was able to teach him. His attitude and sense of humor made him a pleasure to be around. Eric will be missed by myself and the entire community. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends who were fortunate enough to have been blessed with knowing him better than I.

Melissa Kahn

March 8, 2005

I had the chance to meet Eric and his family at Fort Carson, CO. My ex-husband Geoff Weichelt was in his unit. I remember the first time that I asked Geoff,"who did you go to luch with today?" and he said "Steffeney" I was thinking ok now who is this woman that my husband is eating with. Come to find out it was only Eric who was no threat to me at all. My husband was very good friends with him, so therefore I became very good friends with his wife. It was so wonderful to have such good friends. When Geoff and Eric would go on VIP missions Theresa and I would go out to dinner with the kids or go shoppping. Anything to keep us busy and to keep our minds off of missing our hubbies. Eric was always so happy and he was actually one of Geoff's friends who I enjoyed coming over to the house. Theresa I know he loved you to death and like I told you in an earlier e-mail, feel blessed to have gotten to have the years with Eric that you did because some people will never in a lifetime be able to find that kind of love. Stay strong and keep his memory alive.

I'm glad to have known you Eric!

Love always,

I have known Eric Steffeney for about 8 years now. We first met in EOD School. He was a SPC and I was a young Sergeant. Over the years we ran into one another on deployments and VIP missions. Then in 2002 I was stationed at Fort Bragg with him. It
was only then that I really got to know Eric, I feel blessed to have known him. He has enriched all of our lives; he made us laugh and helped us as a unit through some very stressful and demanding times. You see Eric had a very special quality, his demeanor. He had a calming effect on those around him. No matter how stressful the situation he was steady and was able to help those around him to focus. His influence and leadership in this unit was a large part of our success in the past three years. In those three years we have deployed to Iraq twice and saw three members of our company wounded. He has been a leader and a friend to all, and I will miss him dearly. I will miss his sense of humor, his cheerful nature, his compassion, and his calming influence. I loved him, and I am very proud to have served with him and to serve with all the soldiers of this company. Eric died doing something that he believed in; he gave his life so that others may live. His passing will not be in vain. He lives on in all of our hearts. We as a company and a community will honor his sacrifice by continuing to fight the terrorists and their devices here in Iraq, and all over the world. We (EOD Soldiers) will continue to save life and protect property!
