Travis R. Bruce Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 25, 2005.
Travis Bruce wrote home about the close calls, like the night someone dressed like an American soldier tossed a bomb into a nearby tent. The Military Police officer was apprehensive about his second tour in Iraq. The first time, he guarded U.S. administrator Paul Bremer and other VIPs. This time, he guarded Saddam Hussein's palaces. "He thought he was really lucky to get out of there (alive) the first time," said Jerry Bruce, an uncle. Travis Bruce, 22, of Byron, Minn., was killed March 23 in Baghdad, Iraq, when a mortar round detonated near his position. He was based at Fort Lewis. In high school, Bruce loved playing sports, especially football and baseball, and worked at a rib joint for extra money. The 2002 graduate enlisted in the Army to help pay for college and followed his father and grandfather in becoming a military policeman. "He just wanted to better himself," said his mother, Vickie Bruce. He was hoping to return to the United States soon so he could begin training as a K-9 officer in Texas. He is also survived by his father, Kenneth Bruce.

Look at all the people that love and miss you, all the lives you touched on such a short time on earth. You are an amazing young man. I only wish Lyla could personally know her Uncle. She is amazing, and some days reminds me of you, her little goofy smile, her shyness and her attitude. Lol. I got to finally to talk with Rob, and its amazing how we can pick right back up and talk about all the good times we all had together. I love and miss you so much. Thanks for being our angel. Until we meet again.

To the family of Spc. Travis R. Bruce:

As you may know, the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation has honored your loved one at its Memorial Day Sunday worship service (each year in May) … since the time of your fallen hero's ultimate sacrifice. We will continue to pay tribute to our nation's veterans … lest we ever forget!

Now we would like to honor you … as the next-of-kin … who have also paid a great price on the altar of liberty. On Sunday 29 September at 11:00 a.m. we will host a Gold Star Family Sunday.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship … as we pay tribute to your sacrifice. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain (Colonel-Retired) Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “By Dying, We Live.” The special music will be the husband/wife vocal/piano — Wickman Duo. Following the worship experience, your family is invited to attend a social time in our Fellowship Hall … with some light refreshments.

As this historic chapel has limited seating, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,
Leila Campbell

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Bruce Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to troops in Afghanistan this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Travis R. Bruce US Army Specialist. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. Hey brother, it is almost the 23rd. It will be 6 years this year. It feels like forever. I miss you so much. I am over here again as you can already see. There are several things that I should not have walked away from but I did, thank you for watching over me and protecting me. I know mom and Cliff miss you too. Nobody has been the same since you went away, we all wish you were still here, to laugh and joke with us. Some day I will see you again and we can pick up where we left off when things were cut so short.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

We are sorry this post is so late, we have just come across this fantastic website. What a great means of honoring our heros.

We can't imagine what you have been going through since being notified of the death of your young Warrior. The Military and families all over the USA and world are grieving with you and praying for you. What a very brave individual you have in your family that would give up a life for their homeland and its people so they can remain free. Your Freedom Fighter has served the Country above and beyond the call of duty, let no one ever tell you different. With the mission now completed your Warrior has been redeployed to Heaven to sit on the right hand of the Supreme Commander and Chief. The Father above has Travis in his arms and will give him peace as well as eventually easing your pain and suffering. God speed to you and Spc. Travis R. Bruce, our HERO. We are so proud of them that are willing to sacrifice for this great Nation, THANK YOU.

I took Zachary up to see you yesterday Travis. I showed him all of the pictures of you and your friends and family. He even said your name, although he needs to work on it a little. You never got to know Zachary, but he's going to know all about you and how you were a great friend of his mommy's and a wonderful person. I miss you Travis, we all do so much. You're in my thoughts and heart every day. --Mary

Travis... I remember all the times when I was little that you acted so much like a big brother to me. YOu helped me grow and learn to be who I am today. Though you did traumatize me by pulling my barbie doll's heads off and putting htem on your GIJoes... I'll let that one slide, especially since I made you watch the Care Bears with me. Love you bunches upon bunches!

To the family of Spc. Ravis R. Bruce:

The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 28 May, 2006. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “What Are We to Remember?” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,

Leila Campbell

I was there that fateful night when was Travis was taken from us. I wish I could say I could have done something to stop it from happening. My thoughts and prayers go out to Travis' family. I loved him so much and he was my battle buddy. He always made things fun despite the worst situations he shedded some light and made people smile. I will never forget him. Our platoon would not have been the same without him, I would not have been the same without him. It was a an honor to know someone like Travis. He is one in a million.

Travis I miss you. I will see you later.

To his family, I pray for you, be strong and know that your son is a hero, not just because he died, but because of how he lived.

To the Bruce Family, I new Travis for a short time, and in that time I could see that he was a great person. He was fun to be around and talk to. There is one thing that I learned from Travis and that is you can’t take life for granted, you have to live your life the way you want to, make you dreams come true, work hard for everything and most of all, make sure that the ones you love and care about know that you love them and care about them. I know that my friends and family that have met him could tell from the start that he was a great person and they had all the respect in the world for him within minutes of talking to him. Travis you will always be in our hearts, and we will always be thinking about you. God Bless you and your family.

Travis was my childhood sweetheart back in elementary school and the beginning of middle school. I remember all the sweet things he used to do even though we were just kids. He was selfless and caring for others which you don't find often these days. My deepest sympathies and prayers are with his family. A song comes to mind thinking of him now--Mercy Me "Homesick". Travis--you'll be in my heart always until the day I see you again. I'll never forget.

I am a soldier in the 170th Mp rear detatchment. I remember when Bruce first arrived at the unit. Bruce and me and a couple other soldiers had to go out for night drivers training and while it was Bruce's turn to go through the course he allowed us to sit in his truck to keep warm because it was chilli that night. And when he got back he found out that i hurt myself on his truck i had fallen off the back and got a black eye. while everyone else was laughing he was apologizing and asking if i was alright. thats when i knew he was no ordinary guy. I always felt like me and bruce were connected somehow. When we got to Iraq i would often visit him during down time and hang out and smoke ciggerettes and talk. he was a really great guy and he will be forever missed and i really sympathize with his family. i met his dad and i could just tell that Bruce was very near and dear to his heart. good luck to the Bruce family in the future and i will pray for you.
