John E. McGee Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 6, 2005.
John McGee was a joker with a smile that could light up a room. "He was such an inspiring person," said his mother, Rebecca. "He walked around smiling. He was wonderful. I love him." McGee, 36, of Columbus, Ga., was killed May 2 when his tanker truck was hit by a bomb blast near Diwaniyah, Iraq. He was based in Camden, Ala. Born and raised in a tiny town in the Mississippi Delta, McGee enlisted in the Army when he was 17 and served eight years before joining the National Guard in 1996. He completed a program to become a lieutenant but had not yet been commissioned. McGee also worked for a home health agency in Georgia. He had two sons, ages 11 and 2, and a 6-year-old daughter. "He always laughed and smiled. He was the nicest guy you would want to meet in your life," said Undray Williams, a friend since high school. "I'm thankful to God. He gave him to me for 36 years," his mother said. "He's taught me some things _ what love really means."

John McGee...Today as I look back and remember your funeral in the high school at Rolling Forks, MS in May of 2005, I am hearing of the terrible disaster that has hit your home town and has demolished it.. It's been 23 yrs. and I remember well the hugh old oak trees that helped to make it more Old South knowing that everything there is forever gone. I am Praying for you all, your family and friends at this time. It brings back old memories and the pain and hurt seem so fresh. I feel like the town is gone forever but not the memories. God bless . You are missed.

I never really came to grips with you dying. The minute we met in Clayton at the 1103rd we were road dogs. Weather it was at drill, staying at my parents house, hanging out in various places in Columbus or Eufaula, we knew we would have each others back. Thanks for all of the memories. I ll never forget you bro. Finally got married to the woman of my dreams. Wish you were around to see it, but in a way I know you did.

This is a day that will be plaqued in my heart and mind. On this day God sent for one of his true soldiers, to continue his good work in heaven. The short time that God allowed us to use you in our lives was unforgettable and will forever be etched in my heart and many other members of the 2101st TC. The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know John, but I am remembering on
this day he gave his all.
He is my hero.

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

First of all, let me say that I really miss SSG. MCGEE. When he was attach to the 2101st Trans. Co. my mother and I open the vacant house up to SSG. McGee and friends. And ever since that day we all connected and became really good friends. WE ALL MISS HIM HE WAS A DEAR FRIEND TO ALL THAT CAME IN CONTACT WITH HIM. HE HAD A SMILE THAT WOULD JUST MAKE YOUR DAY. TO THE FAMILY MAY GOD KEEP YOU AND BLESS YOU DEARLY.

August 14, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

It has been two years since John left to be with the Lord. In just this short amount of time, so many changes have occurred. The Lord has sent a precious grandchild into my life, who my son has loving named Jon. I and my husband have embarked upon new careers, and my big sister has returned home. As I think about the empty void that John's death created,I also realize that God fills voids while we are still here as well.It is then that I am reminded that one day our family's chain, which was broken by John's departure, will link again. With this in mind,I no longer fear Death, but am now more curious about the life after. I smile when I contemplate that I will see that crazy boy again. Eventhough I do not know what form we will possess in Heaven,I do know that we will be known as we are known, and that one day,I will see my little brother again. I love you John.

I would like to start by saying, I MISS YOU DEEPLY JOHN. SSG McGee and I were very good friends. When you show me, you know that he was somewhere close by. I meet him when he was attached to our unit when we were deployed to Iraq and we instantly became friends. He had a smile that would lighten up the darkest of days and there were many days like that in Iraq. He brought alot of joy and happiness to alot of people over there. I want to say thank you Mother McGee for raising such a fine young man and know that he will be truly missed by alot of people. You all are always on my mind and in my heart. I will always be here for you all!

a poem written by my daughter Jordan Wright age 7 on 12/4/05 in memory of her father Sgt. John E. McGee

I WONDER WHY MY DADDY HAD TO DIE

I wonder why my daddy had to die.

Sometimes I feel sad, sometimes I get mad,

Sometimes I just break down and cry.

I was only six years old, when my mama told me that he was gone.

He was fighting a war.

Why, I dont understand.

But what I do know is that I miss that man.

I wonder why he was hit by a bomb.

To my last birthday he could not come.

To bring me presents and have some cake.

My mama said its not good to hate, But I hate that he never saw

me ride the bike he brought me

when I was four

because he is not here any more.

Forever and ever he will look down from heaven and see his smile on my face.

Maybe I will never understand why my daddy had to die.

I love you daddy and good bye.

I did not know Sgt. McGee, I only learned of his death from the blog of his commander, Chris Amos.

After reading Cpt. Amos' memories of John, it was clear how beloved he was by his brothers in the 2101st PT. I searched his name and found this guestbook. After reading the entries from his family and friends, it hit home. I wept for him and for all of our soldiers who have died fighting for our peace and freedom, as well as for those in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world. It moved me to write this small tribute to him.

How grateful we are to have, and sorrowful to have lost, men like Sgt. John E. McGee. May God welcome to Heaven him and his brothers who have given their all for us, and may He bring comfort and solace to the McGee family and all of the bereaved families of our fallen men and women. John, You will be missed. I thank you for being the wonderful friend that have been. I thank you for being there for me the times that you were and helping me through some tough times. You had a big heart and a lot of big dreams. I know you were busy when you came home checking on family members and the kids and we didn't get a chance to visit, but I know you were trying. You will be missed by many. I know you were looking so forward to getting out in a couple of months to get started on those big dreams (your music and getting back in school). Now you go on with those heavenly songs of joy. The new songs in your heart....until we meet again (Cinamon). I will continue to keep the family in prayer, and ask GOD to strengthen you all during the lost. You all be strong because that is what he would want. Cast your cares, burdens, questions, hurts…on the Lord for He truly cares for you and it is too much for you all to carry around….Remember the good times and keeps those near.

It is a priviledge and an honor to be a part of this signing. It was an ever greater priviledge being John's oldest sister. I truly miss him and will always remember the special times that we shared as children and also in our adult lives. His smile, his love for others, his awesome personality and his great love for God and his family will always hold dear to me..I always called him my baby, because he would always follow me wherever I went. He knew I would always protect him, but this was one time I felt helpless in knowing I could not protect my baby anymore, because of our different places in time and space.. He was the kind of person that you loved to see coming and hated to see leave, because when he left, you felt empty. He took a part of himself that left you longing to be in his presence always.I will forever love him and know that he is in heaven smiling and talking to God. I thank God for the opportunity of knowing him and His allowing me to be part of his life. I will see him again.
