John M. Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 14, 2005.
When a young John M. Smith was offered the chance to jump off a 34-foot tower as part of his military training, some wondered if he would ever return to Earth. "From then on, he knew what he wanted to do," said Glenn Smith, his father. "From that point on, he was airborne all the way, and when he graduated from high school, he joined the Army to go into the airborne." Smith, 22, of Wilmington, N.C., died May 12 when an explosive detonated near his vehicle in Iskandariyah. He was based at Fort Irwin. "He liked camouflage clothing _ fatigues and that type of uniforms _ from the time he was a little boy," said his father. "But when he went to ROTC, that sealed the deal. From then on, he knew what he wanted to do." Smith graduated high school in 2000 and played football, baseball and lacrosse. He liked both punk rock and oldies, and often wore an Allman Brothers T-shirt. Nicknamed "Pudge," Smith would poke fun at himself for being overweight, said close friend Sgt. Robert Shull. "He wasn't your typical soldier," Shull said. "His sense of humor was crazy."

Sgt. John Smith,
I served with you both in Fort Bragg and California. I remembered seeing you there at "Ramp" at Pope, road-marches on Bragg, remembered when you got boarded for E5, EIB training, 2003 War in Iraq; and the flight out from theater... I remembered when you checked in at Irwin; when you trained-up the unit there for deployment, even conducted several missions with you before you volunteered to train-up the local security force at Iskandariyah... I was even there the night you were hit. God bless and comfort your family, loved-ones, and friends always and give them peace. You will be missed Brother. Airborne! All The Way!

To the family of Sgt. Smith,
Please know that just as your loved one will remain in your hearts and minds, his sacrifice and that of your family, will remain with the people he died defending. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for his bravery and selflessness, or the heartache we feel for your loss. God grant you the peace that passes all understanding.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know John, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

August 14, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

My blessings go out to the family and friends of SGT Smith. Being a native of Wilminington, NC, a graduate of New Hanover High class of 1984, an 8 year veteran on the 82nd Airborne which I was a member of in Operation Desert Storm and also a participant of the Iraq war with the 173rd Airborne I give my regards to family and friends of SGT Smith. May he rest in piece. Airborne!

Please accept my sincere sympathy for the loss of your son Smitty. I had the pleasure to meet him after returning from his 1st tour in Iraq with my son's Bryant and

Marshall. I was fortunate enough to spend a couple of nights in the house he shared with Bryant in Fayetteville and we would set up late just talking. Like everyone has said he had a great sense of humor. I still have pictures of him and Bryant together on the screen savers in my office. He will always be remembered here and you will be remembered in my heart. May God bless you and your family.

My son and "Smitty" became such good friends as they served together in the 82nd Airborne on their first tour in Iraq, and then as roomates in Fayetteville. I enjoyed meeting him and loved his crazy sense of humor. My family joins with you in your time of loss and also in the celebration of "Smitty's" life.

I am very sorry for your families loss. My little brother CPL Kevin William Prince was just killed in Iraq April 23 at the age of 22. He was also in Echo Troop with John and was a good friend of his. It has been really tuff for our family. We have had nothing but support from our friends and people that knew Kevin and people who didn't. We know that Kevin is in a better place now and God is taking care of your son and my brother. They will be watching over us till the day our time comes and we get to be with them again. I am really sorry for the loss of your son and if there is anything my family or I can do for you please e-mail me at [email protected]

God Bless,

I'm sorry for your loss, I know how hard it was on your family and my deepest thoughts and prayers go out to you. I was at the funeral and burial (I was with LTC Chaffins' group of AJROTC cadets). I have a lot of respect for your son, not only because he made the greatest sacrifice for our country but because of the respect and great friendship he showed to the winner of the Cape Fear Sword on awards day when he was attending NHHS. He sounded like a very sweet, respectable, and down-to-earth man. May god be with you and your family.

God Bless Mac Smith and his family. I knew Mac while at New Hanover High School....we were in the AJROTC together. He was so full of life...could always make me (and everyone else) laugh and felt like an older brother to me. He was a truly remarkable man...it is unfortunate that Mac is no longer with us, but in a way I feel good knowing that he left us while enjoying what he loved and what he loved was serving our country, defending the freedoms that we hold so dear but yet at the same time can forget how easily we can lose those freedoms. To the Smith Family...Mac will never be forgotten and you are in my prayers.

We lost our nephew, Kevin Prince, in a car bomb blast on April 23 in Iraq. I know Kevin and John were good friends through these years as soldiers. Our family knows how these last few days have been for your family. Our sincere sympathy to all of John's loved ones. Our hearts are full of holes right now. There is pride in the job John and Kevin did for the freedom of the world's people. The words of the song, Proud to be An American, have such meaning in the face of our loss. Our beloved soldiers made the sacrifice we all hoped would not be asked of them or the people who love them. But it was. God bless those who remain to continue the struggle and keep them safe.
