Ming Sun Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 12, 2007.
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. (AP) _ Ming Sun wanted to be a soldier and an American. The Chinese immigrant got both wishes. But one came after his death in Iraq. At his funeral Monday, his parents received his Purple Heart, Bronze Star and certificate of U.S. citizenship. "For what Ming did, we can never repay him," Cathedral City Mayor Kathy DeRosa said. "This will always be Ming's home." Sun, a 20-year-old Army private first class, was killed on Jan. 9 by enemy fire in Ramadi, Iraq. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, based at Fort Carson, Colo. Sun was buried at Riverside National Cemetery. Ming came to the United States with his parents when he was 8. Acquaintances said he wanted to become a soldier, especially after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. "He tried to convince me to go to the Army," a friend, Kenny Wu, told the Desert Sun of Palm Springs. "We used to swim and play video games. I'm sad now because we can't hang around anymore." Sun graduated from high school in 2004 and started college. He enlisted early last year as a rifleman so he could be guaranteed a trip to the front lines in Iraq. His father, Hong-Yuan Sun, told The Gazette newspaper in Colorado earlier this month that Sun had told him he was happy in Iraq, planned to re-enlist when his three years were up and hoped to eventually become a general. Sun's squad mates have "lost a brother," Sgt. Robert Griffith said Monday. "It was an honor to know a great soldier. He was one of the best," he said. "Anyone who knew him won't forget his smile. He was very proud of everything he did."

A couple of nights ago, I had a dream about that terrible night. I was one of the medics that received Ming at the battle aid station. I was also the last one that saw him alive. I've always wanted to contact his family to speak to them and share the last moments of their son's life. If there's anyone that can provide me with any contact information to Ming's family, please feel free to e-mail me. Thank you.

A Soldier
There is discipline in A Soldier
you can see it when he walks,
There is honor in A Soldier
you hear it when he talks.
There is courage in A Soldier
you can see it in his eyes,
There is loyalty in A Soldier
that he will not compromise.
There is something in A Soldier
that makes him stand apart,
There is strength in A Soldier
that beats from his heart.
A Soldier isn't a title any man
can be hired to do,
A Soldier is the soul of that man
buried deep inside of you.
A Soldier's job isn't finished after
an 8 hour day or a 40 hour week,
A Soldier is always A Soldier
even while he sleeps.
A Soldier serves his country first
and his life is left behind,
A Soldier has to sacrifice what
comes first in a civilian's mind.
If you are civilian -
I am saying this to you.....
next time you see A Soldier
remember what they do.
A Soldier is the reason our land
is 'Home of the free',
A Soldier is the one that is brave
protecting you and me.
If you are A Soldier -
I am saying this to you.....
Thank God for EVERY SOLDIER
Thank God for what YOU did!

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Ming, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To PFC Ming Sun's Parents,
I am sorry for your loss. The sorrow will get lessened but will never end. Still, I am proud to be a fellow Chinese American serving in the military, although I never made the ultimate sacrifice. Keep in mind there are people out there that grieve for your loss of such a young patriot.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Hey buddy,
It sure is different now that your not around but I'll always remember that smile of yours. Truly an image that will never be forgotten for those who knew you. From all of us still out here man we miss you a lot. I don't want to say goodbye not now not ever. Every moment I spent with you I will always treasure. Your family misses you man, especially your friends. All of us still down here will take care of your family and your little sister Allison. Everytime I see her I cry because she reminds me so much of you. I remember when you would just go to my house because you didnt want to wait for your sister after school.
I only wish that I had spent more time with you while you were on leave. I know you miss that car of yours, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 8 MR. I know how you don't like when people touch or drive your car. I'll tell you right now Tristan drove it for you. It was there at your funeral. We kept it as clean as we could for you buddy, they even put the parts you wanted on. Oh and your dad stalled in it but shh...
We all miss you man. We have shirts with you on it. That shirt is hung on my wall man, so I will remember you until I see you again. I don't want to say goodbye so I won't, I'll say, I'll see you soon.

I met ming my freshman year of high school. It has been 4 years since then. I was devestated the night I recieved a phone call from a friend asking me "if i had heard the news"....i knew it wasn't good with the tone of voice he had. he broke the news to me, and it didn't really hit me until after i had hung up. with tears in my eyes, i couldn't believe what i had been told. Ming had been killed in iraq. As sad as i was to hear that, i knew i had to be strong not only for myself, but for our friends and mings family which was taking it far worse than i was.

ming you are always in our hearts. your were a very brave person and we love you dearly. we always knew we could count on you for a good smile every now and then. your memories with us will never be forgetton and will always be cherished. you are now in Gods hands, and with that said, we know you are in a good place. our prayers are still with you and your family. you are forever in our hearts. <3

To the family of our great son and brother Ming Sun:

I knew Ming personally in middle school. He was always in a cheery mood, super optimistic, and naturally kind. Last I seen him was 9 years ago, in 7th grade. I remember when we used to play pokemon cards together, those were good times. Upon recieving this news, I was devasted that something like this happened to such a good person. My condolences to Ming's family, we have all lost a great hero and friend.

Ming, it has been an honor.

I was PFC Ming Sun's battle buddy at ITB C 1/19. I heard the news from another buddy who was in our ITB platoon. I didn't think we were particularly close, but somehow the news had shocked and saddened me. My condolences to the family.

January 19, 2007

To the Family of Pfc. Ming Sun:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Heaven's Call
.
Heaven called and you were taken
So young to go, to young to know

The call of heaven did not wait
Your time here a short stay
You were called away
To be part of God’s everlasting garden

Borrowed seed from the Master
A small little bud that graced us with your beauty
Now returned upon heaven’s call

A finely chosen rose
Taken before it bloomed
Before your beauty had time to unfold

He is the Gardner and you his prize winning bud
Perhaps He seen a storm that you could not with stand
So he picked you before the wind would fall

The memories forever etched in our hearts
Our little bud now blooms
With the angels up on high
