Hello,
We wanted to let you; your family and friends know that we have made a small donation to the Gary Sinise Foundation in honor of Forrest Dane Cauthorn US Army Sergeant.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,

I lost my son 16 years ago in Iraq. I was looking around and happened on this. I was with the Patriot Guard Riders in 2007 there at Richmond. For years and years I had a small sticker with Dane's name on it in my truck from that mission, but I can't find it now. But I will not forget his name nor his sacrifice after all these years.

Hi! My baby girl was born the very day this soldier passed away. I read about it in the Washington Post right after Teresa was born. I made a promise to do something really special in this soldier's name on April 5 of every year. Teresa is 3 and a half now, and she's off to pre-school:) I know she has the very best guardian angel out there b/c I believe that angel is Dane:) Please continue the chain of love started by Christ and do really good things for strangers, the poor, the depressed, and every child who crosses your path:) This way people like Dane keep getting good things done on earth:) May God increase your strength , folks:) Thank you, Dane, for everything!

To the family and friends of Dane.
Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers today.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Dane, but he is my hero.

If you would like a copy of the Angel drawing that I drew, contact me and I will email that to you.

I feel a tremendous loss for Dane's family. I knew Dane when we were children. We used to catch fire flies in my neighbor's yard in the summer time. His younger sister is my cousin. We went to the same middle school. I would have liked to have known him as an adult. I just recently learned of his death. My heart goes out to his father. God Bless you Dane. I know you are missed everyday!

Dane and I have been best friends since the day we met. Pretty much inseperable until this of course. One of the greatest things a man can do is lay down his own life for those he cares for and that's what Dane did. He always made everyone around him laugh regardless of what was going on or how angry they were. Once you met him you never forgot him and we never will. He was a brother to me and it's real hard without him around anymore. It's real ironic that our last conversation was about the meaning of life and how neither of us cared about being some great inventor or president or something like that. He left his mark on all of our lives and especially those that he died for. I miss him everyday and it's not easy to go through life without him. Going through the neighborhood or to old hangouts or just doing normal things i would typically do with him isn't easy or the same and it never will be. He was the best man, friend, and person anyone could have known and it's an honor to know that we we're each other's best friend and "brother".

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

He was one of the nicest, kindest, funniest people I ever met. He was my brother, and I will never forget him

To the Family of Sgt. Forrest D. Cauthorn:

Please accept my condolences on the tragic loss of your son. I turned 40 on the date of his death and just read about it this week. His passing has humbled me, someone just past half of my age made the choice to stand up and do something he believed in, a courageous and bold move. I have never done that, outside of discussions and arguments safely behind the borders of my own nation.

I will not forget the death of this 22 year old who has taught me a lesson in giving, living and life.

Thank you Forrest.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history…they pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

I am heart broken to hear of this. Dane served in Afghanistan with my husband in 2004. I remember when he came to Hawaii. We have lost to many since then. He fit in immediately with such a close group of guys. I take pride in saying if only for a short time I knew him. Although we are no longer in Hawaii we think of all that served that time together often. He will be missed by many. My husband continues what they started then in Iraq now. We will keep your family in our prayers. There are no words to express how we are all feeling in this time of loss.

Dane,
I know you were there with us in spirit but I wanted everyone else to know that at my school we had a moment of silence in remembrance of you this last Monday during our Monday Morning Meeting. My friends remembered you from when you came and spoke to our whole 4th grade. Remember, you stayed and talked and answered questions for about 2 hours. I am glad you got to stay with Melanie and visit with us when you were here. We will miss you. Since we shared to the same Birthday I know I will never forget you. Makenna remembers being your flower girl in your wedding. I do not think she understands that you are not coming back here to visit, any way I just wanted you to know. Although I haven't seen Dane in years, the world feels colder knowing he is no longer in it. I knew Dane when he lived by Meadowbrook High School, and most of my fondest memories of that time involve Dane. My heart goes out to his father and family. Billy,
We want to send our heartfelt condolences in the loss of Dane. Even though we haven't seen him in several years we still
have fond memories of the years that he and Jared were friends. We'll never forget the days of Dane and Jared running around the neighborhood with Jack and Taz.
I only wish that we had kept in
contact and we could have known him
as a grown man. Jared is now serving in Iraq and when I told him the news about Dane he was actually able to fly to meet with
Dane's unit and talk to the guys who were with Dane. I can't imagine the loss you feel. You were such a great Dad and I know Dane was a great son.

Dane and I dated back in 9th grade but hadn't talked since graduation but I still remember it like it was yesterday when Dane lived right up the street from me on Brandonburg. We were also in JROTC together and all he ever talked about was joining the arm when he graduated-that was his dream and even though he is gone, at least he passed doing something he always and loved doing. It's crazy how people are there one day and the next day they are gone, never to return again. Dane was a very sweet guy and I enjoyed the personal time I got to experience with him (and at the time, his best friend Rob). I know he will be missed by many people, especially by his dad who I know was his best friend!
My thoughts and prayers go out to all his friends and family.

Dane, you were truly a unique young man. Its people like you that make this world a better place. You made the ultimate sacrifice and will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with your family through this difficult time. Im proud to have had the privilege of being a friend.

Vickie Robinson

April 16, 2007

Dear Billy,

My name is Vickie Robinson. My nephew is Jordan Penniger who was in Dane's unit and a good friend from Hawaii and Iraq. You met my neice Crystal and my daughter Kami last week-end. They said you were a very nice man and enjoyed talking with you. They represented Jordan's family because Jordan or the rest of his family could not be there. I would like to extent to you our sorrow and sympathy in the death of your son (A True Hero).

Jordan was home in January on leave. We had a big family dinner for him the Sunday before he had to go back. That night his aunt passed away suddenly. She was only 53. We feel that God let Jordan be with his aunt, my sister one last time before he took her home. My mother is broken hearted over the loss of her child, therefore we know your pain.

I know your son was a wonderful person. Jordan is grieving not only for his aunt but one of his dear friends. My heart goes out to you. Your son died doing what he thought was right for his country. WHAT A HERO HE WAS.

God Bless and Comfort you,

To my long time friend, "Billy",
How sorrow I am to hear of Dane's ultimate sacrifice for my freedom. Although many years have passed between us, I remember each moment like it was yesterday. Our son, Chris, was deployed Sept 17 2001 to secure Afghanistan with the Marines 3rd Battalion 26th MEU. We were blessed to have him come home safe. I was with you when Danny was taken from us to be with our heavenly father, I think we both learned the value of "time heals all wounds". Although time doesn't make us forget, thank God, it does help us understand his purpose. I'm sure from reading from friends that knew Dane best, their lives have been greatly enriched. I'm sure all can't help but smile when they think of him and remember the good he brought. If more time passes before we are able to see each other, know that I will always remember Dane as a American Hero.

I was Dane's French teacher at Falling Creek Middle School, and I can't beging to tell you what an impressive young man he was. The last time I saw Dane, he had returned to Manchester HS to visit friends after he had joined the Army. He looked so handsome, and he was proud to be serving his country. He was a friend of my daughter, Ally Clay, while they were in JROTC together at Manchester. Dane is a true hero, and he was a fine, young man. I will never forget him.

I would like to extend my sympathy to the family of Dane Cauthorn. My husband, Joshua (who is also based out of Schofield and at the same FOB as Dane), was close friends with him. Every time I saw him, he had a smile on his face and was hard at work trying to make everyone else smile... His sense of humor will always be unmatched, and he will always be in our hearts and minds. God bless his family and friends. You will all be in my prayers.

My son Matthew Powell and Dane where friends all through middle and high school. They continued their freindship after Dane joined the army. My son Matt in now in the army also and stationed in Bagdad, Irag. We pray for him everyday. He is very proud to be serving his country even though we are not wanted there. He would come home at a moments notice if he knew about Dane. But we are honoring wishes of Billy not to tell, in hopes of keeping him safe. May God bless and keep Billy and his family safe.

As a mother who lost her only son in Iraq, I know the pain your family is going through. I wish to offer my deepest sympathies and condolences for the lostt of Sgt. Forrest Cauthorn. My heart hurts everytime I see the name of another military member added to the list of fallen soldiers. May your memories bring you a small piece of comfort. It is so difficult to lose a child. Thank you, Sgt. Cauthorn, for defending our freedom. You are definitely a hero. Darlene Kelly - mother of Sgt. Shawn Dunkin KIA 2-19-07

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

It is with the deepest sadness that I ask the family and friends of this brave young Soldier to accept the offer of my most sincere and heart felt condolences. I hope that you know that your loss is shared and mourned by millions of Americans. Most of whom you don’t know and in all probability will never meet. We sincerely appreciate the sacrifices made by your patriot.

Freedom is not free; it is paid for by our heroes, and for those who fight for it, Freedom has a flavor the protected will never know! This soldier made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

I know the pain parents feel when they loose a child. I lost a son 19 years ago. It is a pain that defies description. It is a pain that never goes away. It is a pain that will never end. It is a pain that is all consuming.

I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

May God Bless and keep you today, tomorrow and forever!

Rest in Peace brave soldier; you did your duty with great honor, dedication, distinction and in the highest traditions of our great country.
