Hello,

We apologize for being so late in expressing our deepest condolences to you and your family. We want you to know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this holiday season and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo, service branch, rank and hometown of Joshua A. Schmit US Army Sergeant.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families, friends and others who support our mission.

Here we are, year seven in heaven! Still seems like yesterday :+( It is Easter Sunday morning and I am reflecting on our very last phone conversation from Iraq. You were so very excited and actually sounded like our Joshie :+) void of the stress, anger, and fear that always plagued your voice! You were packing up all your gear and training your replacements! With just one last mission and two weeks to go before leaving hell forever!!! Who knew that six days later we would be entering our own hell with the notification of your death! ;+( We are so very grateful to God for allowing us to hear your voice at peace...we love you and miss you every single beat of our heart! Soar HIGH on eagles wings our sweet son!!!!!

Each and every day brings fond memories of our dearly missed Joshua. It has now been three years since our family was destroyed by that I.E.D.!! Josh deserved to come home to all of us and so despritly wanted to be reunited with his new bride! It is hard to get beyond the cruelty bestowed upon our son on his very last mission and knowing how excited he was at exiting that country! He did come home, however, in a closed coffin. We were told that "it took his identity", and were forced to accept his fate! As the days grew into months and now into years, well we have sought comfort in knowing he is whole and that God has made him a very special place in his grand kingdom! Until we meet again sweet Joshua, know that your mom will ALWAYS honor your life and your memories! God Bless each of you.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Today is a day of rememberance, i spent the day with my sister and our families as we paid tribute to her son (my nephew) cpl. troy c.linden who was killed on july 8, 2006 in iraq. he too, like your son was a minnesota boy (born and raised) who loved his country and ultimately paid the price....but as we stood by his resting place to pay tribute, please know that your family and all the other families that know and understand our pain and grief and yes,our pride for our brave boys that our tears were not just for troy, but for all the brave soldiers and their families..God bless you and God bless Sgt.Joshua Schmit sincerely,lisa foster, DL,MN (auntie of a hero)

My heartfelt sympathy to the Schmit family in the loss of Joshua. I did not know Joshua, but my heart is broken and I am saddened for your loss of such a fine young person and hero. May God bring you peace in your heart as you reflect on all the wonderful memories you hold so close. Please know that you are in my heart and prayers. My heart was touched by the many wonderful/beautiful things written about you. Joshua you are my hero and you will NEVER be forgotten.

The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 27 May, 2007. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “Remembering” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. I had the pleasure of knowing SGT Schmit and SGT Wallace when I was there PLT SGT at Camp Shelby MS. Both were great Infantry men and both were GREAT MEN, I will Miss them both. God bless both families

to the schmit family, my son served with your son in the 1451st i believe on this mission...my heart goes out to you...i have been worried so long about hearing news like this about our soldiers...i just can not believe we all were so close to the end of this deployment and we have lost 2 great guys...i dont know what to say to your family to help the pain, but PLEASE know that all of us in the 1451st family group are praying for you, your son & love ones...our soldiers are to always be looked at as brave, strong men and woman who took the time out of their lives to serve our country...our famuly will always remember joshua in my sons army book...sgt joshua a. schmit will always be remembered by our family as the brave soldier we supported over the last yr...god bless our all mothers, familys, wives, sisters, brothers and the whole family...joshua is protecting you now with gods support!

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
