Derek C. Dixon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 28, 2007.
Will Couts, who taught Derek C. Dixon at the Military Careers Academy, said he would often talk to Dixon for hours after school about everything from computers to MP3 players. Couts called him a young man who "could have gone either way" when he was a teen but "found himself and got on the right track." Dixon, 20, of Riverside, Ohio, was killed June 26 while working at a vehicle checkpoint in Saqlawiyah. He was assigned to Camp Lejeune. "Even when he was real young, he always knew he was going to do something wearing a uniform. He was such a good kid, and I''m not just saying that because he was mine," said his grandmother, Glenda Brightman. In November 2004, Dixon and another student put together a presentation on Veterans Day for the school. Dixon spoke about the history of the Marine Corps. "He really believed in it and wanted to serve his country," Couts said. "He found his niche there." "I talked to him before he left," his sister, Mindy Trochelman, said. "He said he was ready to go, but he was scared." He also is survived by his mother, Melissa Trochelman, and father, Tom Trochelman and his wife Ercela.

Cpl,
It seems like yesterday i was training and mentoring you to be the best you could be. You always gave me that goofy smile of yours no matter what was going on around the shop. Even when you would be corrected, you would still just smile away. Who would have thought that you were actually teaching me all that time. You taught me to be more kind-hearted as a leader and how to be humble. I am a better leader for it and my Marines are better for it as well. Not to mention that they appreciate you for it. I'm a part of the last Flag Command leaving Afghanistan. I'll be finishing this tour for you brother. You were the best Marine I've ever had the pleasure to work with and the best Marine I know. You will always be remembered. Semper Fi MARINE.

Prayer Shawls 4 Fallen Soldiers is an organization with groups throughout the country who strive to send handmade prayer shawls and/or lap robes to families who have lost a loved one in service to our country. Members of Trindle Spring Lutheran Church in PA would like to honor you son's sacrifice and memory by sending our prayers and comfort through a shawl which we will mail to you. If you are interested, please contact me at [email protected] with names and addresses and which they would like to receive, then we will send them as soon as possible. Also, if you know of any other families who are grieving the loss of a loved one who died while serving our country, please pass along my e-mail address as our organization can no longer get family contacts through the military. May God bless you and comfort you in the days ahead. Sincerely, Lynne

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Derek, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of your son, Derek. We did not know you son, but having read many of the guest book messages, we feel a closeness to him. We will continue to pray for Derek. His memory and photo has made a lasting impression on us. Our son is currently serving his third deployment in Iraq. Derek's courage is further elevated as he joined the Marines during an ongoing conflict. He had other choices and we are greatly moved by his strength and commitment to his country.

Thank you Derek for standing in the gap for all of us, for freedom. Memories are the legacy of love.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Derek went to school with our son. He would come over and play with Justin when they were at Brantwood. We have watched him grow up into a nice young man. He loved his fishing because we would see him walking home with his fishing pole over his shoulder many of times. He was proud to be a Marine. He would walk the neighborhood in his uniform and was very proud. We are proud of him too. Our thoughts and prayers are with you especially today. Just remember he was loved and was a hero.

It is amazing how a death can affect people you never knew. Derek and my daughter began emailing and calling each other a few months ago. Our sons both spoke with him. We all looked forward to actually meeting him one day. Jess spoke to him 4 days before his death and all our friends here in Alabama knew of "Derek the Marine". Jess' office put a box together for him and unfortunately he was killed before it was sent. My daughter sent the box in his memory to his unit in Iraq. This has been a difficult time for many people who never got to meet Derek. His family should know that many people mourn his death with them. He touched many lives beyond those they know. His service to our country is greatly appreciated. Bless you Derek!

Just yesterday I was watching
a young boy play......
Until he came to me to say,
"I'm a man
And I'm gonna defend this land!!!"
But I thought to myself
He's only sixteen.
I supported his decision the best I can,
As I watched him train
To become a Marine.
I thought to myself....
What a great man he will be!!!!!
As I sit by his casket side,
My eyes fill with tears,
And the fear starts to disappear
because the man upstairs gives me
The courage to reply.....
"Hold your heads up high and be PROUD of this man,
Because he's a great Marine
Whom died defending our land,
But NOW is living
In the PROMISED land!!!!!!"

Love You Oppie!!!!!!!

Mindy,
Our hearts go out to you and all of your family grieving at this time. You mean so much to us and there are no words that can comfort you now. I hope someday you can read the passages that so many who love you and those that don't even know you or your brother, have left for you. Your brother was a hero before he ever went to Iraq. His passion to do something worthwhile and to make a difference in our world is so commendable. I wish his story could have ended differently, but a part of him will always be with you and your family, because his spirit and love of life is within all of you.
Take care sweet "Minnie".We love you.

We can't imagine what you have been going through since being notified of the death of your young Warrior. The Military and families all over the USA and world are grieving with you and praying for you. What a very brave individual you have in your family that would give up a life for their homeland and its people so they can remain free. Your Freedom Fighter has served the Country above and beyond the call of duty, let no one ever tell you different. With the mission now completed your Warrior has been redeployed to Heaven to sit on the right hand of the Supreme Commander and Chief. The Father above has Derek in his arms and will give him peace as well as eventually easing your pain and suffering. God speed to you and Cpl. Derek C. Dixon, our HERO. We are so proud of them that are willing to sacrifice for this great Nation, THANK YOU.

Derek and I were great friends our sophomore year at Stebbins High. We had geometry together and hit it off really well. He always looked after me and made sure whatever guy I was dating at the time knew that he was my best friend. He was my big brother. I moved after that school year to Alabama and he and I remained in contact with each other. He went Marines and I went Army. He used to tell me that Army stoof for "Ain't ready to be Marines yet". I called him Teddy because he was my big teddy bear brother. He called me kitty because of my catty attitude. He and talked on the phone just a couple months before he died and he congratulated me on my marriage and pregnancy. He then told me that he'd always had a crush on me. A fact that I had known to be true but never confronted him. And over all those years, he kept our friendship. He knew how much I valued it. We told each other things we didn't tell anyone else. Teddy, I love you and I always will! You were the closest thing I had to a brother and I will miss you terribly. And I must say, you were always a damn fine Marine and you served our country well bro. I love ou. Rest in Peace always Teddy. No more wars for you. You'll suffer never more. I love you!

May God give you the strength that you so need at this time. Derek is a hero. He chose to serve his country before he left high school and continued his mission by actively serving in the Corps. Our condolences to his grandmother and other family members. We are proud parents of the NW OHIO MARINE FAMILY SUPPORT Group whose sons are serving in Iraq and around the world like Derek. We only knew about Derek's personal history thru the media; we all knew him as a son in our Marine family. We are the Home of the Free...because of the the brave. God Bless you. God bless our fallen hero. Our hearts are full of pride for the Derek's in the world and he will be forever remembered. When one Marine's family weeps, we all weep. We are all a proud and hearty Marine family whose spirits have been raised by the courage of our Marines and the sacrifices that many families have made. Semper Fi! NWOH Marine Parents.

Derek's death has hit our family so hard. Our family new Derek because he dated our daughter for several months. We remember him as being a very polite and thoughtful youngman. I remember how proud he was to be entering the Marines. My husband had just retired from the Air Force and they would often talk about the military. If he wasn't talking about how excited he was to be going into the Marines, he was talking about his love for computers, working on his car and country music. He was very intellegent and very mature for his age. He knew he wanted to serve his country and I remember the last time I saw him, he stood so proud in his uniform he looked so happy. Derek you lived your dream of being a Marine if only for a brief time. Thank you for loving your country so much you were willing to give your life for it. Our prayers are with your family during this most difficult time.

To:The Dixon Family. Those of us who have lost a son or daughter in War have the knowlege of the feelings which are present when this occurs. Our son Sgt Bruce Horner USARMY, was killed June 1st by a sniper south of the Baghdad area. He was 43 years of age.He had served 17 years in the military police. He like so many of the men and women who served with him are the true heroes of this war. He will be greatly missed .I never knew Derek, but my other son served in the marines for four years. It is comforting to know that all of our dead service people had served because they were hoping to change the world. Our condolences to Cpl Dixons family. Ed and Betty Horner, parents of Bruce, Douglas C. Horner and his family, and Erin Horner wife of Bruce Horner May He rest in Peace.

I knew Derek briefly. What stands out about him most was his desire to join the Marines and serve his country. He knew the commitment involved and was excited about it. He had passion for what he believed in and was wise beyond his years. Lord, bless Derek's family with peace, love and comfort please. He was a fine young man and a hero to our nation!
