Christopher C. Johnson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 17, 2007.
Before deploying to Iraq, Christopher C. Johnson took his children - ages 4, 7 and 10 - to share with them the special places where his father had taken him when he was young. His mother, Mary Johnson, said the children "just adored their daddy." In fact, he was working on adopting them since they were his wife's children from a previous marriage. Johnson, 31, who grew up in Grand Rapids, Mich., died Aug. 14 when his helicopter crashed in Taqaddum. He was a 1994 high school graduate and was assigned to Fort Wainwright. Johnson joined the military in 1994 and went on to become a Green Beret. After being part of covert operations around the world, he decided to pursue his dream of flying. He had assured his mother it would be safe to fly a Chinook. "He always told me, 'Mom don't be afraid because it's the fastest, the biggest and the safest.' And he told me he wouldn't have to kill anybody, that he would be transporting things and helping people. He always wanted to help people," Mary Johnson said. He also is survived by his wife, Vivian.

Chris,

You and your family are always in my thoughts and prayers. I have fond memories of flight school. You were the life of the party for sure! There was never a dull moment when you were around. I cannot imagine how much your family misses you. People like you are rare these days.

This Memorial Day my girls and I have decorated a Memorial Day tree in honor of all of the fallen servicemen and women and I am adding your name to the branches. It is the first year we have done so but I think I will continue the tradition. I would like my girls to grow up knowing Memorial Day is more than just an excuse to have a bbq.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Christopher, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Chris,
It's been almost one year since you left us brother. It has taken me this long to gather the words of your untimely misfortune. I think of you everyday, most of the time to tears. I speak to Vivian quite often, I know you would do the same for me brother. I'll miss you dearly; one day we'll reunite brother and share the laughs we always had.

To the Johnson family,

I know there are no words to say, except how sorry I am for your loss. May you hold Christophers' memory in your heart and please remember he shall never be forgotten.

...For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

Dear Family of Chris Johnson, Today is the memorial service at Ft. Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska for Chris and his fallen commrades. Only the immediate families and his military family were allowed. But please know that you are in my thoughts this day as you have been these last 23 days when I heard the news of his untimely death in Iraq. Chris and his family attended our church for a time here this last year in North Pole, and he was faithful to give of his time and resources to our church family. It was a joy to get to know Chris and have him and his young family in our home for supper after service. They reciprocated with a lovely afternoon dinner at their home a month or so later. What a nice time. We hoped to see Chris again when his tour was over in 2008 October. Now we look forward to seeing him in our heavenly home where he patiently waits for his loved ones. You are in our prayers and will not be forgotten for your incredible sacrifice that you've had to make. Sincerely,

Doug Diekman

My heart goes out to the Johnson family. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, it was always great to hear the updates on Chris when Dean would tell all of us guys about Chris' military success. Chris will be remembered for not only just being a great kid, but always giving his all, from playing football in the front yard at Kooiker's in Grandville, to serving his country. You all have been and will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers.

The Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.

REST IN PEACE CHRISTOPER, TO YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS MAY THE MEMORIES OF THIS WONDERFUL SOLDIERS LIFE FILL YOUR HEARTS WITH BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES
GOD BLESS YOU

August 17, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
