Jonathan Rivadeneira Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 18, 2007.
In March 2004, Jonathan Rivadeneira and Heather Nied met at boot camp. He was off to the Army, she to the National Guard. By the time they started 16 weeks of medic training, they were best friends. Shortly after they finished, Nied invited him to visit her family. He called her after he left. "He said: 'Come to Texas. I want to marry you,'" Nied recalled. They were married in April 2005. He was deployed Oct. 2, 2006. Rivadeneira, 22, of New York City, was killed Sept. 14 in Baghdad when an explosive detonated near his vehicle. He was assigned to Fort Hood. Rivadeneira's commanding officer, Sgt. Joshua Lawton-Belous, said the medic could have stayed in the rear, but wanted to be where he was needed most. "He gave up his relative safety at the aid station in order to serve with these guys and put his life on the line," Lawton-Belous said. "He volunteered to be with these guys." "He was my hero and he always will be," Nied said. "He was always really courageous. He inspired me and taught me so much. I will never meet anyone else like him. He was everything to me."

Jonathan, It’s been 17 years since you passed and it seems like just yesterday. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about you and the sacrifice that you made for all of us. I will forever be grateful for the friendship and love that we shared. We were young but created so many good memories together. I just loved being around you. I am so sorry for all of the pain and hurt you endured, and if I could go back in time and make it all better, I would. You did not deserve any of it. You were always so brave and courageous, that’s one thing I always admired about you. I miss your laugh and sense of humor but I know you are in a much better place. Rest in peace. Forever in my heart, Heather

I had a dream last night that you were alive. I have this same dream every year or so and I always wake up happy to have seen you and incredibly depressed to remember that you are gone. I wish I had been a better friend -- you were always such a faithful and kindhearted friend to me and I didn't appreciate it. I'm sorry for that. I really miss hearing your voice, randomly calling to check up on me. I miss you, Jonathan. Wherever you are, I hope you know that there are people who still love and think of you often. xoxo

Well I honestly do not know where to start. It has been years since the day we lost you my friend. It was a hard pill to swallow. I figured it was time for me to man up and express my condolences. I remember sitting in the motorpool and wondering if you could get family separation pay for your dog as well as getting a family care plan for the dog before you deployed. You were joking but yet so serious at the same time. These are the moments that I like to remember the Riva that could make us laugh. It was a real heartbreaker the day we had to cry. You will never be forgotten my friend you were a great Soldier and Medic. I am sure your humor and personality are being put to use in a better place. All Gave Some, SOME GAVE ALL......SOLDIER MEDIC, WARRIOR SPIRIT.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Rivadeneira Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

To Jonathan's family and friends:

I was very close to him once. We kept if touch for years by letters and phone calls as children. When i went to serve in the Air Force he gave me words of wisdom and kind words to get my by. Upon my service overseas in the same war he fought in he said be strong and come home in one piece... we lost touch after that. I just recently found out of his passing from a close friend of his also one of my as a child.

I can't believe that he has passed. I was thinking of him recently saying that i need to find him and reconnect. I am truly sorry and my deepest condolences to his mother for her loss.

Jon you will always be in my heart.

Con mucho amor siempre! Thanks for serving for the same reason i did

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Jonathan, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To the Rivadeneneira and Clark Family. I am truly honored to have served with Jonathan and my heart felt sympathy for your loss. I will always remember Jonathan for his love of New York and especially the Yankees.

Jonathan was very proud to have been from New York and his mentality towards the attacks that occured there was "Never Again". His loyalty to his platoon and unit came from his love for the people of New York and what they meant to him.

Jonathan's untimely death was very difficult for the Medical platoon of 6-9 Cav, but we endured as Jonathan would have wanted us to do.

Our return to Fort Hood in December was bittersweet in the fact that Jonathans bright and shiny smile was missing for our homecoming. He was missing from our side, but will always remain in our hearts.

I am truly honored to have been his Platoon Sergeant and will forever be indebited to his sacrifice for our nation. Soldier Medic!!

To Riva, You will be missed my friend. I am very blessed to have had the chance to get to know you and who you were in life. I will never forget the times we had in the back of the track working and sleeping while we were on the “Grey Wolf Challenge” mission. The way you laughed at Clark when he told you to get out of the track and do some pushups for what the reason was I don’t remember. But, I do vividly recall your hysterical laugh you let out at him.
You had an awesome sense of humor, a great personality, and you always brought a smile to other soldier’s faces whenever you spoke with your character. I am extremely honored to have had the chance to serve with you in our country's Army, served with you side by side in training as medics, and to deploy with you to Iraq and serve with you there doing what medics do best...helping others. You are a true Combat Medic!
You will never be forgotten Riva, you are always going to be remembered by so many soldiers out of the Saber Squadron, out of the 6-9 Medical platoon, by your whole family, by everyone who loves you! Rest in peace my friend…God Bless You!

I would like to send my deepest condolences to the family of Jonathan Rivadeneira for their loss. There are no word poetic or soothing enough to help take away the grief that you feel. He was an honorable man for fighting for what he believed in. He will be missed by many people including myself who has not seen him since June 2000.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

To the family of SPC Jonathan Rivadeneira,
Our hearts go out to you in this time of pain, sorrow, and grief, and also in the days to come. We humbly offer our deepest sympathies and condolences. We were stationed in the 27th MSB, 1CD with "Riva", and never a day went by that we didn't enjoy his wonderful sense of humor and jokes. Our "Riverdance" as we called him, gave us so much joy and laughter, and he will forever be sorely missed by his fellow soldiers. He was an exceptional Soldier Medic and friend; the Army has truly suffered an irreplacable loss, as have we all. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you always.

To the family of Jonathan Rivadeneira,
Please except my condolances on the lost of your son. My name is SSG Robert Casto and I was in the same platoon as Riva, as we called him. He was a great soldier and a better friend. Wrapped in the integrity of service to our nation and the inestimable values of duty, honor and country, your American hero stood on a wall of freedom for us all. His life and his love of country epitomized every attribute of patriotism the Sons Of The American Revolution hold dear. And, as Americans, we could never repay the debt we owe him ..!! I am writing to offer my condolences to your family over the loss of your HERO Spc Jonathan Rivadeneira. I lost my son in Iraq on May 6/2007, so I can well understand your pain of losing a loved one so dear.

When things settle down, I recommend that you contact a man named Michael Reagan @

He will draw one portrait of the fallen soldier. He does this for free and will draw any picture of your choosing. He has drawn presidents and other celebrities. My husband and I got one and it has helped me with the healing process. Michael is a truly gifted artist that captures the very essence of the person he draws. I look at my picture everyday and it gives me a connection that I cannot explain.

I pray you will be guided by a higher power to give you peace, comfort and strength in this time.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
