Joyce M. Quaintance

Joyce M. Quaintance, age 82, of Wilmington, died on Sept-ember 29, 2008.

Joyce was born to the late Charles and Ethel McGuffin in Lexington, Virginia at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital (the actual home of Civil War General Stonewall Jackson) and graduated from Fairfield (Va.) High School. She married Barton P. Quaintance in 1948 at The Old Stone Presbyterian Church, Timber Ridge, Va. Bart's career had many transfers throughout the country, and in each new home city, they would join a Presbyterian Church. Joyce served as a Deacon and also volunteered in Women's Circles in several of the different churches. Most recently, Joyce and Bart were members of Concord Presbyterian Church for a combined total of 41 years. Joyce was a member for many years of Beta Sigma Phi Social Society, where she served as Queen of the Valentine Ball of the Waynesboro Chapter on February 13, 1970.

In her later years, she survived many serious illnesses - always with grace, strength and determination. In fact, one physician observed that she was the only person he knew who awakened from anesthesia with a smile on her face. Kind, gentle and loving to everyone she encountered, Joyce was a life affirming lady who loved flowers and people in general. However, raising and nurturing her family was the greatest joy in her life.

Joyce is survived by her husband; Bart; their five children, Deborah Cook and her husband, David; Douglas Quaintance and his wife, Terri; Nancy Nelles and her husband, David; Alan Quaintance and his wife, Meg, all of Wilmington; and Richard Quaintance of Arlington, Va.; the 10 grandchildren she doted on, who fondly called her Mamie - Victoria, Timothy, Rebecca and Elizabeth Cook; Robert and Daniel Quaintance; Kelly and Meredith Nelles; Morgan and Tyler Quaintance; and two sisters-in-law, Virginia Quaintance, of Culpeper, Va. and Ruth McGuffin of Fairfield, Va. In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her brother, Charles and her son, David.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, October 2, at Concord Presbyterian Church, where friends may call after 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests honoring the memory of Joyce M. Quaintance by sending a contribution to Concord Presbyterian Church, 1800 Fairfax Blvd., Wilmington, DE 19803.

Messages of condolence may be sent to .mccreryfuneralhome.com.

Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Culpeper, Virginia Saturday, October 4, 2008 at 11 a.m.
