This popped up in my email so I thought I would say a few words. I was Nick's 9th grade physical science teacher and he comes to mind every time I have the kids "check in" after taking a test. It is an optional time to share with me confidentially about how life is going. If I ever forgot to tell the kids about that option on test day, Nick would pipe up loudly with "Miss Kiene, what about the check in??" He always loved sharing with me both the good and not so good of his young life. I miss his honesty, friendliness and zest for life. Love you Nick!!

Dear Fix family,
While I never met Nick myself, our daughter is a student at Jefferson High School and knew Nick well. I can tell by the impact that this has had on our daughter, that Nick was a very kind and giving person. Our daughter has shared with us that one morning she tripped going down some stairs. While several other students were laughing and kicking her belongings, Nick went out of his way to help our daughter to her feet, and then he began helping her pick up her belongings. This had a tremendous impact on our daughter and showed the type of character that Nick had. You can be VERY proud of the type of young man that you raised!
Our prayers are with you and your entire family during these difficult times.

Joey & Sara and Alex, Reading the entries in this guest book only further show us what an extraordinary, special young man Nick was.....from the Fireman he took time to chat with, to the customers at his job at CVS.........friendly and caring about each and every one of them. Uncle Paul's words written earlier in this book say what all are feeling. The picture posted on this guestbook site of the Candlelight Vigil is so touching to see and then to reflect back on the words of his friends and his brother at the vigil as they spoke of his love and laughter and joy in living each day to the fullest. Know that we hold you all in our hearts and prayers until we see you again.
A WARM, STRONG HUG to all of you.
With our Love,
Margie & Tim

To our daughter Sara, Joe and Alex - Our hearts ache along with yours at the loss of Nick. 18 years is too short a time for a grandchild with so much living to do. We have no answers but we will always have the love in our hearts and the joy that Nick brought to us whenever we were together. His place in our hearts will never be filled - nor do we want it to be. Every day we will close our eyes and see his smile and be grateful that he was our grandchild. Grandpa Dick and Grandma Mary .

Dear Fix Family,
I had the honor of knowing Nick since the first day of his high school career. I had him in ninth grade physical science along with his buddies Joe, Sam, Jostin, Ben, Tyler, and Matt. At conference time parents couldn't believe they were all in the same class. When asked if I had separated them I smiled, laughed and said, "I don't have seven corners of the room"!! As time went on things settled down and I grew more and more attached to those "little rascals" of which I think all involved would agree Nick was the "head rascal". I would give kids a chance to "check in" periodically on quizzes/tests and let me know how things in life were going. If ever I forgot to mention the check in opportunity, Nick would be quick to remind me. He was the "King of the Check In" and continued to do so long after he left my classroom. As the years went on we kept in touch and actually got a chance to reacquaint ourselves in detention. He would sit close to my desk and always want to talk when he was supposed to be absolutely silent for 84 min. Can you even imagine that??? I would remind him that detention was supposed to be an unpleasant experience and that conversation with me could be quite pleasant and therefore must be avoided for the duration of detention. Just a few memories of my red headed version of "Dennis the Menace". I was so looking forward to seeing where the road was leading Nick. I think the best days of his life were yet to come but the way he treated people and his positive outlook wer e second to none. "Mr. Fix", as I affectionately called him, lived his life to the fullest each and everyday and in honor of him I will do my best to make the most of every moment.

Dear family and friends,
I am an old jaguar and never had the pleasure of meeting Nick, but sounds like a great kid. My deepest sympathy and condolences go to you during this difficult time! I needed to drop a note because while at jefferson and very close childhood friend and senior at JHS, Bobby Mitch, was killed while driving his motorcycle. He hit a vehicle head on collegeview and died instantly. His death was approx 20 years ago and I type note this with tears and goosebumps! I pass the spot of his accident taking my kids to school daily and try to smile thinking about what a great guy Bobby was! I feel your pain and am sorry for the loss of this good kid! Life is a process of challenges and healing, but regardless of any of those challenges you now need to live life to it's fullest in honor of these fine young men, Nick and Bobby, who have left us far too early!! Always rely on the support and love of your family and friends when you need the extra strength because it is too tough to get through alone. My heart goes to you all during this time!
Sincerely,
Bryan Serstock

Dear Family of Nick,
It is so incredible that one young man - in his way too short of a life - could touch and impact soooo many people. I did not know Nick, nor your family, but all 3 of my sons knew him - Billy, my oldest at 27 - just recently met him while hanging out with some mutual Bloomington friends, Marcus 22 - knew him the best of the three boys, and then Danny 16 - knew him from being at Jefferson the last 2 years. We all have felt the loss of his precious life, cut so suddenly and tragically short. May you turn to God for your strength and support and know God's healing love. We read the Poem, The Broken Chain, in the prayer card (from Nick's visitation) aloud tonight - it brought tears to all of our eyes and hearts.
Peace,
Donna Dupre - Mom of Billy, Marcus & Danny Belanger

Dear Fix family,
You may not remember me but my name is Erik, Nick probably referred to me as Goose. I had the pleasure of driving Nick to and from JHS his freshman year there. He always was in a positive and upbeat mood. He made almost any situation a joy because of his passion for life. I was in utter shock when one of my friends sent me a text regarding his passing. I feel for you and have felt similar feeling of utter grief as I had a brother pass away 12 years ago because of heart disease when I was only 8. From which, the Kirks Hoops basketball courts our family made at Dred Scott are in memory of. If you need to have another family to talk to, to help guide you through these difficult times give my mom and dad Rob and Karen a call, as I am sure they would be more than willing to help you out in any way possible. God bless you and your family get through this difficult time.
Regards,
Erik

To Nick's family: I don't know you or your son but my son knew Nick. When I heard what happened I was so very sad. I want you to know I have been thinking of you since last week and will pray for you to find peace someday. I lost two children myself and I know how it is. For a long time I hated God but then I knew that only God could get me through. You have someone out here that is thinking of you and praying for you, and that understands how it is. In this most difficult time that you will ever know, take care of yourselves. God bless you, Nancy
p.s. when you are ready, there is (was when this happened to me) a wonderful group called the compassionate friends, where you can share with other parents who have suffered this same unspeakable loss.

Nick was a great guy, bottom line. We all felt the impact with the lost. I didnt hang out with Nick everyday or even months. I just met him my freshman year and he was an upperclassmen. Over the past 2 years I grew to idolize Nick because he wasnt like any other upperclassmen. He never judged or sneered, just smiled and laughed. It breaks my heart to lose someone with such a great heart. I'll never forget him because everytime we hung out or talked he'd always joke with me and make me laugh. With all love, we miss you Nick. I don't know where to begin; you have been my neighbor and one of my brother’s closest friends since I can remember. You were like another little brother to me… you always knew how to push my buttons and use your charming character to get me to crack a smile. You drove me crazy sometimes, especially on those early morning car rides to school at 8am when you wouldn't stop talking. When I found out about Nick my heart just sank. I didn't know Nick like a lot of people knew him but I am glad that I had the chance to meet him the couple times that I did. He touched a lot of people in many different ways and I think that showed yesterday @ Moyer Park; not just yesterday the past couple of days with all the things that friends, family and neighbors are coming together to do to remember him!
Loosing someone is never an easy thing to do especially a child. If there is anything that I can do let me know!

I will always remember Nick because of his witty comments and contagious laugh. He was and always will be one of my favorite students. He will be missed by those who knew him and by those whose life he had yet to touch.

Growing up behind Nick was a great pleasure. My brothers and I were always playing football or shooting Nick and Alex with nerf guns. I'm terribly sorry to Joe, Sarah, Alex and the rest of thier family for this loss. Nick was an amazing kid, and though I hadn't seen him in a year and a half, his loss still weighs heavy on my heart.

Sara, Joe & Alex-
As a long-time neighbor, I want to express my condolences for your loss. I still have vivid memories of baby-sitting Nick (and Alex) and seeing him race around the neighborhood with an endless amount of energy. I hear that he grew up to be a kind, popular young adult-I am sorry I never got to know him as a young man. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you in this time of tragedy.

I believe the spirit of "Nick " lives on I saw it at the candlelight vigil at Jefferson, hundreds of school mates came together with one common thread "Nick", how many said that "Nick was my best friend", "he made me laugh, believe in myself" this was a special man. For those of us that were fortunate enough to know Nick and are sad or mad at the timing of his death, rest in the belief that God has a plan for all of us and there is no end, just a change in form, we all will get a chance to be with Nick again real soon, I love you Nicholas, Uncle Paul..........

Our family has known Nick since Kindergarten at Olson Elementary. What a great kid and a great friend to Jordan and Taylor! I'll never forget you calling me your 2nd mom, pool parties at our house, hiring you and Brett as my gardeners and your total honesty--always with that big beautiful smile! But mostly, I'll remember how you always made me feel important. I hope we can all learn from your example!

I did not know Nick personally - but I do know that he meant the world to my brother, Josh...and was another son to love for my parents. He was and will forever be a blessing. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. Nick was one of my co-worker at CVS and my memories were of a kid that always had a smile on his face and loved talking to the customers. Plus he would always run to Culvers and get us chicken sandwiches, which I always ate faster than him. I will miss Nick and the energy for life he had very much.

Dick (Mahre), I doubt you remember me. My name is Marti and I am a childhood friend of Joanne's. Joanne called me this morning (4/20) about Nick's tragic passing. My heart goes out to you, Mary, Sarah, Joe, Alex and your entire family in your sorrow. Words will never express what the heart feels. I may not have known Nick but it doesn't change the deep feelings I have for your sadness and loss. I will keep your entire family continuously in my prayers for healing and God's comfort. With love and deepest sympathy -
