Michael Argall Obituary

A Travis County Sheriff's Department employee and avid bicyclist died Saturday after he was struck by a minivan while cycling three miles west of Fredericksburg.

Officials with Texas Department of Public Safety said Michael Argall, 45, was riding eastbound in the right lane of U.S. 290 at 8:13 a.m. when he was struck from behind by a 2005 Honda Odyssey driven by a Pflugerville resident. The driver said she did not see Argall in the road because the rising sun was in her eyes. The incident is still under investigation, officials said.

Argall joined the Travis County Sheriff's Department in 1988 and worked in the corrections bureau as a safety officer. He had served in the Air Force and was in the reserves for 20 years. Jail Administrator Maj. Darren Long said Argall was "a model employee" who had received numerous commendations for his work at the sheriff's department.

"He was a part of our family, and we lost a family member," he said. "He was a good guy, good father. He was a person respected in our department and out in the community as well."

Officer Steven Wentrcek, Argall's supervisor and close friend of 14 years, said Argall was a good listener and kept a level head despite pressures at work.

"He was the kind of employee that he would do what needed to be done without me having to ask him to do it," he said. "He consistently exceeded the sheriff's office expectations. It's going to be hard to continue on without him."

Wentrcek said Argall had won two silver medals for cycling at the Texas Police Games in June.

Argall was a running and cycling coach with Rogue Training Systems, an athletic training center and apparel store in Austin. Co-workers at Rogue Training Systems are planning a memorial bike ride to honor Argall on July 20 at Lake Pflugerville. The center is also collecting donations to set up a scholarship fund for Argall's three children.

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Gateway Community Church, 7104 McNeil Drive.

Michael, I think about you daily. I miss you. Yesterday I was downloading video from my camera and came across the video of Nathan's garaduation party at my house on June 7th. It is still so unreal. You look so good. The next day we all went to his graduation and then out to eat. You, me, Shamayne, Lisa and the kids. We all laughed and enjoyed each other's company. I hugged you outside as we parted "see ya later". Less than 3 weeks later you were gone. I have this perpetual lump in my throat that I know will go away with time. I know you are really living life now, but I just miss you.

Love, Cara

Thank you Michael for our times together. Each time I was around you, I left feeling better about myself & life! That is an amazing gift. I would leave our time together and wonder how you did that. Then I would be reminded that it was your incredible personal relationship that you had with God. I always looked forward to our times together. Daniel, Nathan and Sydney -

We were so sad to hear about your dad. I remember when Daniel joined out cub scout pack, Michael was very involved in the Brown Santa program. He was instrumental in getting our pack involved as well. It was a project which the kids really enjoyed and we continued for many years. We still have the patches he gave us for participating. He also attended the pack meeting when we were honoring the armed forces and talked about his experience in the military. Your dad was a kind and generous man who will be very much missed by everyone who came in contact with him.

Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Michael, Sharmaine (so sorry if misspelled), Sydney, Daniel and Nathan were my next door neighbors when I moved to Austin eight years ago. Life circumstances changed and they moved from next door and I have missed them all since. Michael was an exceptionally friendly and helpful neighbor. He was an avid cyclist, and a great giver to the community. He relished his work with Brown Santa. I remember frying turkeys one Christmas with he and his family along with my visiting family; he lent quite a hand in my first attempt in the turkey frying. My Dad really enjoyed listening to the stories Michael told of his Air Force experiences. My sympathies and my condolences to his family, his extended family and to Cecilia and all those that knew him. God has taken back one of his angels; his work may be done here but God must have some additional plans for him to which Michael will be up to the task. May God comfort Michael's family and the family of his friends.

This Note is for all of the Argall family, but especially "long hair" Dan-as Garrett would always call you :-) After reading your dads memorial Dan, your heart sounds as big as your dads. You were so kind to have the music memorial for Garrett after he died in February. I can not express to you how much better that made Duncan, Nigel and I feel. I only wish that now we could offer you some comfort in return. Your act of kindness was the passing along of that love that came from your father. As long as you continue to breath and do good, his love will live on through you. Please know that Duncan and I are here for you ANY time. God will bless you. I have asked Garrett to greet your dad and give him the biggest hug possible.

Michael and I served together on the production team at Gateway (in the old building). He always came in with a smile, served willingly, and left smiling too. Like everyone who knew him, I can't picture him without that grin. Michael truly had a servant's heart, and he shared his joy, his joie de vivre, with everyone around him. To his family and friends: I'm so sorry for your tremendous loss. I pray that you will feel God's peace, and that in time you will remember only the good, not the injustice of Michael's being taken too early. He loved you. Always remember that.

Michael was my brother in law for many years and I have always considered him as family. He and I were the first in laws welcomed into a big loving family and we shared many great times together. He was truly one of a kind, a loving dad, wonderful friend, kind person, always willing to help, always serving. It has been inspirational to see how many lives he touched and what a impact he had on people. I have missed seeing him over the years, but I am happy his life has been so meaningful. We will love and take care of his family in his absense, and we will miss him tremendously.

Mike,
You are truly going to be missed.
When I joined the Sheriff's Office over 13 years ago, you helped teach me what it means to wear the badge. You taught me by your own example to treat everyone I worked with, both officers and inmates, with the utmost respect and courtesy, regardless of the situation. Your kindness and your love of helping people was visible in all that you did.
Every year at Christmas time my mother called me to say that she saw you at Brown Santa. She commented on how you always remembered who she was, and how nice you were. Thank you.
My thoughts and prayers will be with your family and loved ones. I also want your family to know that mine is just one of the many thousands of lives that you touched over the years. We are all better people for having known you.
I wish you God-speed on your journey.

Michael was my cycling coach for the past two years, and he brought so much joy to my riding as well as inpsiration for how to live a good life. He helped me through many struggles and his smiles and encouragement made the toughest hills bearable. I was honored to meet his beautiful daughter as she joined several of our classes. My heart goes out to Cecelia and the rest of Michael's family, co-workers, and friends. I'm still in shock that I won't see him again.
