W. Lockhoof Obituary

W. Reed Lockhoof W. Reed Lockhoof, born October 3, 1945, passed away suddenly Saturday, September 27, 2008. He loved life and all it had to offer. His philosophy of life was based on the simple golden rule: "treat others as you would like to be treated" and put your family above and before all else. That will make you a winner in God's eyes. Reed was the absolute best friend of and for his wife, Nancy, and son, Flip. He was best man at his son's wedding and best 'Reed' for his grandchildren. We will intensely miss him until we reunite again. Only time, friends and God can help them survive the pain. Reed was an avid golfer, and in his younger, healthier days, there was never a day too cold or too hot, too windy or too still for golf. Golf and its required tenacity were his mistresses... and often those golfing days were spent with family, friends, and/or associates. Reed and his son became partners and played as golf partners in over a 150 golf tournaments throughout the state. Nancy would generally go along, walk every step of the way and have her walk with nature and communion with God along with husband, Reed and son, Flip. Reed's love for the law was second only to his love for golf and his family. Reed and Nancy shared endless love for each other and their family. His devotion and dedication to his wife, son and daughter-in-law, and grandchildren made him the most wonderful and caring husband, father and grandfather that this world has known. All who knew Reed will remember him for this... and his hearty laughter. Reed was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Darlein Lockhoof of Childress, TX. He is survived by one son, Filip Reed Lockhoof, an engineer and product marketing manager with Cirrus Logic; daughter-in-law, Michelle Felger Lockhoof; and granddaughter, Taylor Renee Lockhoof; and grandson, Shane Thomas Lockhoof. Reed was an only child; his mother was an only child, and her mother was an only child. Although Nancy has already lost her mother and father, older brother and older sister, her one remaining sister, Diane Harris, from Scottsdale, brother Spencer and his wife, Sharon Ford from Hamlin, TX, Milton and Jodi Reed from Lubbock, along with aunts and uncles are helping her and Flip survive the immediate pain. Reed graduated from Childress High, Childress, TX. He received his BS from the University of North Texas and his J.D. from Texas Tech University. As an attorney he was always on the side of the law, from the District Attorney's office to the Attorney General's office. Being one of the best trial lawyers in the state, the courtroom became his friend, and the judge and jury became his audience. Flip, his only son, once heard his mother say that Reed is the most ethical lawyer she has ever known. Reed's life was cut short by his chronic asthma, COPD, and disabling arthritis. Memorial services will be held at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 3525 Bee Cave Rd., Thursday, October 2, at 1:30 p.m. with family visitation and reception following the services. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Lung Association, 'First Tee of Greater Austin' or charity of your choice. "Treating others as you want to be treated" was truly his golden rule. Obituary and guestbook online at wcfish.com

I had the privilege of working directly with Reed for over 15 years. He was my friend, advisor, and librarian first, co-worker second. I have so many good memories of Reed, it seemed there was no subject he didn't have some knowledge of. We spent a lot of time talking about our families, he had a genuine, not a passing interest in all of my kids, particularly my son Austin who shares his intense love of the game of golf. He taught me how to sharpen a knife, knew my taste in fiction and always picked out just the right book, and could diagnose just about any medical malady known to man! I will never forget our last trial together - we spent half the night talking in his room, actually he talked, I mostly listened! He had more good "war" stories than anyone I know. We'll miss the pumpkin rolls he passed around every Christmas, he was always very generous with our staff. Reed was a very lovable man even though he ranks up there with my dad as possibly one of the most politically INcorrect people I've known, which I personally loved about Reed- you never had to wonder where you stood with him! Great man, extremely ethical, and my absolute honor to have spent as much time with him as I did and I already miss him dearly! My sincerest condolences to Nancy, Flip, Michelle, Taylor and Shane. Please know that he carried his love for you everywhere!

Reed's love of the game of golf meant that we could count on seeing him here at Instant Replay Golf at least once a week for many years. All of our staff, past and present, were saddened to hear of his passing and would like his family to know how much he'll be missed. His ready smile and hearty laughter made him a favorite "repeat offender"--our term for the regular customers who have become like family at the shop. I do believe that there are no slices, hooks or three-putts in Heaven--and I'll bet he's found the perfect Driver for his game at last (but I'll also bet he's already thinking of reshafting it...).
We'll miss him.

From one of the many Texas law enforcement officers who benefited from having Mr. Lockhoof represent them in a lawsuit, I appreciated the comfort, knowledge and experience that he offered. I have always been thankful for his professional representation. It’s certainly admirable in our society for a man to continue to work for the betterment of society, when the lure of more money must have been tempting on the other side. The world is a better place because of him. He was a colorful man of character led by a divine guiding light. I send my condolences to his family and friends.

Reed was a great man and a joy to be around. He was a fine mentor to me when I worked at the attorney general's office and we tried a case together. Reed will truly be missed. My condolences to his loved ones--know that God is with you always and especially during this time.

Reed was a true friend to law enforcement and a legend in the Attorney General's Office. I first met Reed around 1980 when he was a young Assistant Attorney General and I was a much younger cop. Reed had a huge reputation in state law enforcement circles as being on the "A" team of the AG's Office, mostly because the Attorney General would send Reed in on some of the most difficult and complex cases. Reed defended numerous law enforcement officers throughout Texas when they were wrongly sued for doing their jobs. Reed saved numerous officers careers, mine included, by his sage legal advise and his abilities in the courtroom.
I've worked with dozens of attorneys in my career but Reed's abilities always stood out.
I have many plesant memories of Reed. Rest in peace my friend, the best always go too soon.

I officed down the hall from Reed and always enjoyed watching him walk in with his cinnamon roll and coke, throw a slight comment at his nearest neighbor and then hear his hearty laugh... mostly likely because of the response he'd received. Reed was LEDD's patriarch, mentor and friend and will be greatly missed. Thank you, Reed, for the advise and great talks over the last 21 years. I will forever miss you. To Nancy, Flip and family, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Reed had a big heart. It was shown to all... I worked with Reed in LEDD. I always made sure to get a smile out of Reed, if he was not having a good day or dealing with opposing counsel stuff... Reed made you laugh. He is missed already and LEDD will not be the same. I am praying for your dear family for peace and comfort during this time. 2 Corinthians 1:3-7. He is missed dearly.

Growing up in Childres, it was always Reed, Jerry and Ronnie as best friends. I wondered why Reed was on my mind so much this last week; sadly, now I know. In my heart he will still be there with his infectious laughter. I will miss him until I die.

doggone it I hate to hear this. I also grew up with Reed in Childress. Simply put.....has anybody ever met a more classier person than Reed. I had not seen Reed since 1960 but I have never forgotten him. What a jewel we are missing.

October 1, 2008

Reed was one of the first attorneys I worked with at the AG's office. Both Beth and I learned so much from him. He was always there to listen, regardless if it was about work or just about you. He was a great mentor at trial, especially when he would tell Seth to object in his "quiet" voice. He had a tremendous impact on us all, and we will miss him.

My condolences go out to Reed's family--and to his many friends who share the pain of loss. Nicki Wilcoxson was kind enough to inform me of his passing. I was Reed's English teacher during his junior year in high school, and when I recall those days over 45 years ago, I always see him in my mind's eye with a big smile on his face as though he was thoroughly enjoying whatever was going on in the classroom at the time--or as though he knew something the rest of us didn't know. I also recall a couple of pickup basketball games with him and some other classmates and my generally futile attempts to get past him for a basket. I know he will be sorely missed by family and friends, but I hope all can find consolation in the fact that he made a difference in this life and in the lives of all with whom he came in contact.

Learning of Reed's passing leaves me with great sadness. I had known Reed since elementary school. In High School we were all aware of Reed's keen wit, and the ability to argue any point, he was truly destined to practice law. I also worked at the Attorney General's Office, and we talked frequently, I remember the very last time I saw Reed, it was on the elevator, and he was congratulating me on a case that I just prosecuted. I had so hoped that he would be at our High School Class Reunion, Reed and I always talked of playing a round of golf together, but we never got around to it. We should always take time to enjoy those in our lives as we pass through. Reed, did.

Until we meet again Old Friend.

I watched Reed touch so many lives during his many years at the Attorney General's Office, including mine and my family. He was a counselor, therapist, doctor and legal consultant to all who dared to enter his office, commonly known as "Reed world." He had sage advice on it all. When I had a problem, whether with the law, medical, or personal, I would run it by Reed. He always had time to listen and time to give the answer. Reed mentored so many young lawyers. He graciously provided those around him with his advice about not just the law, but about all aspects of life - parenting, medical care, diet, working out, dental, hair color, age, posture, driving, where to buy cars, color of nail polish,....all issues, especially if you didn't want to hear it. His advice was usually right. I learned a lot from Reed, especially from watching him practice law in and outside the courtroom. All of those who were privileged enough to work with Reed are better lawyers, better parents, better spouses, better people... I will miss "Reed world", including his obnoxious joking, annoying sticky notes during trial, cleaning his nails during interviews with his pocket knife, his war stories, his medical diagnosis, his case analysis, and his hearty laughter. This world is a better place because of Reed. I will forever miss him.
Nancy, Flip and family - Reed loved to tell stories about his family too - he loved you all very much - it was obvious his family was the most important part of his life. You are in my prayers.

Reed was more than just my LEDD co-worker of 21yrs. Reed was my friend. My heart is truly heavy knowing he won't be getting off the elevators to the 7th floor....checking in at front desk with his coffee and cinnamon roll in hand. Saying something lovingly inappropriate to get me going after him. Just watching and listening, I learned alot from him. Reed is very special to me and his presence will be greatly missed in LEDD. "To be absence from the body is to be present with the Lord"...Nancy and family, you and Reed are forever in my heart and prayers.
Much Love.

Reed was my friend and a mentor. He was one of the most selfless people I have ever met. What was written in his obituary regarding Reed being one of the best trial lawyers in the state, is true. I remember when he had never lost a case.

My condolences to the family. I too remember and will miss Reed's laugh.

My deepest condolences to Mrs. Lockhoof, Flip & his family, and the LED family. I am so sorry to hear of Reed’s passing. Reed was one of the first attorneys I worked with at LED. I was his secretary for 11 years. He was a wonderful person - kind and caring friend - funny (he often had me in stitches) - a great boss and an awesome attorney. I can still hear his roaring laughter down the hallway. He will be greatly missed.

Reed was my friend, and his loss is deeply felt. He was also a fine lawyer and a collegue, but we usually talked about airplanes, especially those on his screen saver and the one pictured in a frame on his office wall. We had several talks, when his beloved father died. I know Reed's son must now feel the kind of pain Reed did then. Reed's friends are richer for his friendship and poorer for his passing.

My first office in LEDD was across from Reed's. I can still hear that laugh and see that salt water spray. His ability to break a case down to the most simple terms was incredible. He made an impact on me as a lawyer and person. AAG 1998-2003
