I attended the memorial service for Betty Culpepper, age 96, at Westminster Oaks this past Sunday. It was one of those most beautiful days, cool and crisp, with full sun and bright blue skies preceding spring. The gathering room at Westminster was filled to capacity with friends and family. It was one of the most touching ceremonies I ever attended.
The service was held a week following Mrs. Culpepper’s death, which meant that family and friends had time to reflect on the meaning of this extraordinary woman’s life, and the tone was celebratory. I remember Mrs. Culpepper well; she was ever gracious, tall and erect with a broad, kind smile and gentle eyes. She was not only a wonderful parent and grandparent within her family, but to those of us privileged to be friends with her sons she was like a second mother who could give you a look that, while kind, let you know on occasion that your behavior needed correction.
Mrs. Culpepper is among the last of those mothers of my friends who helped raise a group of us who attended Leon High School in the 1950's, where her sons excelled in athletics, academics, and leadership. Her dedication to her church is legend, but if one was not affiliated with that denomination you never experienced her wearing her religion on her sleeve. I remember Mr. and Mrs. Culpepper, who were close friends of my parents, on Saturday evenings at dinner during the 1950's. They were quite a handsome couple in this community and intellectually stimulating.
All the mothers who helped raise my generation here in Tallahassee saw their men serve during World War II and had to manage their households in hard times. There were no babysitters then, just our friend’s mothers, like Mrs. Culpepper. The food and gas rationing, Victory gardens, scrap metal drives, and watching the skies for enemy planes all happened during Mrs. Culpepper’s time. And, this was after their own hard experiences in the Great Depression. She was always an inspiration to all of us and a model of dedication.
It was through God’s grace that this community was allowed to know Mrs. Culpepper for 96 years. She helped to make our city the wonderful place it was and is. I hope for this generation of Tallahasseeans that there are other Mrs. Culpeppers to fill her place. She was simply a remarkable women in every respect.

Dear Blair,
Please accept our deepest sympathy on the passing of your mother Betty Dunn Culpepper. I never knew your mother but I have always admired your ethic for serving the community and your keen interest in Florida history. I now understand that your ethic and interests were her ethic and interests. You are her legacy and your children and grandchildren are the future legacy for serving the community and loving the history of the Sunshine State.
Sincerely,
David A. Odahowski

Have only known her son Blair and knowing him and reading about his mother, it is clear that the lady raised a fine family and lived a very full life. May Almighty God bestow eternal peace to the departed soul and give the strength to the family to bear the loss.

Bruce, Blair and family,
I too, like Pope, remember your Mother substitute teaching at LHS.
She was so beautifully impressionable and endearing to all of us that we do not forget her! I always looked forward to her teaching our classes.
I am so sorry for your loss. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
God bless,
Kaye Batchelor

Our condolences to the family in this moment of great loss. We both remember with great fondness and appreciation both Dr. and Mrs. Culpepper from our student days during the uproar of university restructuring at the end of WWII. Mrs. Culpepper was Mary's Sunday School teacher at FBC, Tallahassee, a real blessing to us both. Good people cast a long shadow and Mrs. Culpepper casts a long one indeed.

I offer my sincere sympathy to the family of Betty Culpepper. As a young boy, I was influenced by her loving Christian manner as she taught me in Bible School and other activities at the First Baptist Church in Tallahassee and later as a teenager when she brought English and history to life as a substitute teacher at Leon High School. My parents had know Broward as a single man and school teacher in Leesburg before our families moved to Tallahassee and then my Father worked with Broward at the Board of Regents and FSU for over twenty years; and they were both Deacons of the Baptist Church during the growth years. Both Broward and Betty will forever be known for their love of church and community. Sincerely, Judge H. Pope Hamrick, Jr. Ormond Beach, Florida
