John Campbell Obituary

John W. Campbell Jr., 83, died Jan. 26, 2008, at his home in Vero Beach. He was born in Bangor, Maine, and wintered in Vero Beach for 27 years. He graduated from Bangor High School in 1941, and spent a year at Culver Military Academy before entering West Point in 1942, where he graduated with the class of 1945. He flew C-47s in the Berlin Airlift where he logged more than 1,000 flight hours bringing relief supplies into Soviet-blockaded West Berlin. He held several positions within the Strategic Air Command, ending his service at the Pentagon where he helped formulate nuclear deterrence policy. He joined his father in the timberland management business. He expanded that business to include real estate development and residential/commercial property management, staying active until recently. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Joanie Campbell of Vero Beach; sons, Chip Campbell of Tulsa, Okla., and Michael Campbell of Newburyport, Mass.; daughters, Leslie Campbell of Winter Park, Lynn Campbell of Washington, D.C., and Leigh Ferguson of Vero Beach; sister, Pauline C. Carlisle of Bangor, Maine; and five grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960. SERVICES: A service will be at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 29 at the John's Island Pavilion with a reception following at the Island Room. Arrangements are by Strunk Funeral Home Vero Beach.
