Stanley Evans Obituary

Stanley P. Evans, 86, of 88 Masonic Home Rd, Charlton, formerly of Bolton, died on Monday, April 21, 2008 at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty two years Marcia (Siret) Evans; a son, David T. Evans and his wife Jan of Bolton; three daughters, Lani Evans of Norwell; Marcy Thomas and her husband Randy of Medway; and Vicki Evans of Camden, ME. He leaves two brothers, Robert Evans and his wife Marcia of Edgewater, FL; Donald Evans and his wife Gail of Salem, NH; a sister, Jessie Dempsey and her husband Frank of Shirley; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by a brother Richard Evans.

Stanley was born in Shirley to the late Thomas H. and Elsie L. (Powell) Evans, attended local schools and was a graduate of the Ayer High School Class of 1939. He began employment with the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company in 1939 and held various positions before ultimately retiring as General Manager of Outside Plant and Engineering for Massachusetts in 1981. His employment was interrupted in June of 1942 when Stan enlisted to proudly serve his country in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to the 14th Marines, 4th Marine Division, and participated in the invasion landings on Kwajalen, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima, from where he and his battalion went ashore in the first wave and remained on the island for the entire duration of the battle. Having been an Eagle Scout as a young man, Mr. Evans remained an active scouting volunteer throughout his lifetime in the various Massachusetts towns he resided in. Stan and his wife Marcia enjoyed more than thirty years on a small "gentleman's" farm in Bolton, where as an avid gardener, he tended his many apple trees, flowers, and vegetables. He was a member of the First Parish of Bolton, and was an active constituent in town government. He held membership with various 4H Clubs throughout Massachusetts and the Masonic Lodge of Leominster. Mr. Evans enjoyed sailing and shared his passion with his family aboard numerous sailboats he owned throughout many years. His active, energetic lifestyle will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure to have known him.

A Memorial Service is to be held on Saturday, April 26, 2008 at 2PM in the First Parish of Bolton, 673 Main St., Bolton. Burial will be held privately at the Village Cemetery in Shirley. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Philbin-Comeau Funeral Home, 176 Water St., Clinton. Mr. Evans,
Sir, as a fellow Marine I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served in the USMC with the 4th Mar Div during WW II. It was the history and accomplishments that you and your fellow Marines in the 4th Mar Div achieved during the War at places like Roi-Namur, Saipan, and Iwo Jima that all of us Marines who have followed in your footsteps have always tried to live up to. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

David, my deepest sympathy to you and your family. The stories you related to me of your dad were always filled with great love and respect for a good man and father. May you find great comfort in knowing that he is at peace with God.
