Richard Bezdegian Obituary

Richard Bezdegian, 77, of Shrewsbury, died peacefully on Wednesday, May 28th in his home surrounded by his loving family, after a long courageous battle with leukemia.

Richard leaves his beloved wife of 48 years, Irene E. (O'Leary) Bezdegian; a son, Richard J. and his wife, Darlyn A. Bezdegian; two daughters: Susan A. and her husband, Peter Grillo of Shrewsbury and Lisa A. and her husband, Stephen P. Janulewicz of Shrewsbury; a sister, Agnes "Kit" Tarbox of Gloucester; three grandchildren: Peter Richard Grillo, Tiffani Marie Grillo and Taylor Noelle Janulewicz, also survived by several nieces, nephews, and close friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Aram Bezdegian.

Mr. Bezdegian was born in Worcester, son of the late Avedis and Haiganoush "Mary" (Manoukian) Bezdegian and had lived in Shrewsbury for the past 67 years. He graduated from Worcester Boys Trade School. Mr. Bezdegian proudly served his country with the United States Marines during the Korean War.

Richard had worked as an Electrician Forman for the I.B.E.W. Local #103 in Boston for 45 years before he retired.

He was a member of the Quaranta Post #397 American Legion and the Shrewsbury Friends Club. Richard was a true New England Sports Fan and cherished watching his grandchildren sporting events. He was the main event planner for his 50th High School Reunion. Richard was a very kind and patient man, most people were charmed when they meet him for the first time, with his quick wit and keen attention to detail. His first joy was spending time with his wife, children and nurturing his grandchildren. Richard was extremely proud of his son, Richard, who followed in his footsteps.

The Bezdegian family wishes to thank the nurses at UMass Memorial Oncology Dept for all their special care and attention to Richard and his family, and a special thank you to his personal visiting nurse, Carrie.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Richard's family on Friday, May 30th from 5-8 PM in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main St., Shrewsbury. A Dahngark service will be held during the visitation hours. A funeral service for Mr. Bezdegian will be held on Saturday, May 31st at 10 AM in the Armenian Church of Our Savior, 87 Salisbury St., Worcester. Burial will be in the family lot in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury. Memorial donation in Richard's name can be made to the Armenian Church of Our Savior, 87 Salisbury, St., Worcester, MA 01609.

To my Aunty Irene & my cousins Ricky, Suzie & Lisa. I am so sorry at the passing of your husband, father & my uncle. I have not seen my family in so many years but I never stop thinking of you all. I have so many memories from my childhood of spending wonderful times at your house. Playing in the basement & Uncle Dickie was going to get that swimming pool, no matter what & he did. I love & miss you all very much.

Dick was my very best friend for 4 years at Trade School, a friend after that and a fellow Korean War Marine. He did so much for me including introducing me to Shrewsbury where my wife and I lived for 37 years. It was an amazing accomplishment to organize the 50th reunion with his family assisting. I'm sure it was in his mind to do something for the 60th.
My prayers and thoughts and memories will always be with him, as I now feel the sadness of being away for 15 years.
Semper FI, Dick
