Dearest Mumsy: I have had the most wonderful times traveling with you, playing cards (spades, liverpool, and the boardgame sequence every week), eating out, shopping, yard-saling, foxwoods birthday bashes in the ballroom, but mostly visiting family and hearing your stories. You had the greatest tales to tell. One story that stands out as I was looking at your trinkets, I came across Granny Pepka's trophy cup for her beauty contest back in 1920. I remember Mom telling us how Great Granny snuck out of the house that nite to go to the beauty contest. And she WON!! I must admit, we come from a long line of beauties, don't we. But like all other family traits, sometimes it misses a generation!
Mom, these last two years were especially heartfelt as we spent so much time "roadtripping" together. In the spring of 2006, You, Elaine, and I visited with Denise and Ben and the rest of Keith's family, Ravonda, Thomas, and Tracy down in SC. Denise and Ben were such the hostesses with the mostesses!! We stayed with them in their new home, what a delightful visit we all shared. We had a great little side visit, too, to Atlanta to see that new gigantic aquarium with the whale sharks in it. Remember, Mom? I remember like it was yesterday.
Later that spring, Mom and I went out to visit with Becky, Sean and Ashleigh -and Abbie, although we didn't realize it at the time :-) - in CA. We had a great time visiting with the family and remembering "naked baby" (Ashleigh in her diaper) running around the house like the road runner and Becky chasing her all around. That little Ashleigh, she's a runner. We fondly remember playing cards with Sean and Becky, teaching them the card game of spades. Sean was a real riot, and Mom loved his *whammy* impersonation (off the old card sharks game show). The thought of Sean and his cards and his whammies made Mom laugh sooooo much while we were visiting. We also took another little side trip while we were visiting there and mosied on down to Mexico for an afternoon of bartering to bring back little trinkets for everyone.
In the fall of 2006, Mom took me all over the northwest coast. That journey started with a visit to Seattle, then up to Vancouver, B.C., then over to Vancouver Island, taking the ferry back through the channel islands to visit in Wenatchee, WA with Wendy, Dave, Josh and Hannah (for her 5th birthday). Mom would often reminisce reading Joshie's I Spy books with him and play as they slapped their hands down on the skeletons in his halloween book. Mom also enjoyed playing with Hannah and her kittens. As for Wendy's cooking, mmmm, good! Awsome! Did you pick up any cooking habits from your G'ma?
In the fall of 2007, Mom really had me driving *Miss Daisy* (Mumsy) all over creation. We started by driving up to Nova Scotia for the week and following the Cabot trail as the leaves were starting to change colors. Remember coming home after we crossed over the canadian/usa border, Mom? We stayed the nite in Bangor. Upon getting up that sat. morning, I asked Mom if she knew what day it was. Saturday. I asked her if she wanted to yardsale on the way home? Oh, could we, Bertsie? Of course, Mumsy! So we took Route 1 and yardsaled all the way back home. only turning a 5 hour trek into 12 or so, but what's time when you're having fun? We had a good time and filled the car with yardsale bargains galore!!
Then, after the leaves started to peak around here, we went for a little fide down through the Amish country, stopping by Aunt Pearle's in NJ along the way to share our picnic lunch with her - she said we brought down the best salami sandwiches she ever had!! This little adventure rolled our car down and through the poconos, and then winding our way homeward through the Berkshires. The leaves were brilliantly displayed in an array of dazzling colors!
On January 27, we celebrated Mom's 80th birthday with her this year. Some of the family made it up to suprise her, as well as some long time friends from town. Mom knew we were going out to celebrate with her, but the added surprises of family and friends were the icing on the cake.
In this spring of 2008, Mom and I really took advantage of the spring weather. We started yardsaling early, in March. I will never forget the phonecalls Mom and I shared at nite. Mom would call and say, Bertsie, tomorrow looks like it's going to be a beautiful day..............where would you like to go for a ride??? There was no doubt that if the weather was nice, we would be out for a ride. Whether it was along Route 12 or Route 20, as long as it was a back road where Mom enjoyed the scenery, all was well with her. But her favorite routes always led to the oceans.
This spring will be particularly memorable as Mom and I took many a little road trips............we went to Cape Cod a couple of times, to Rockport, MA, Salisbury and Hampton Beach (just this June 12, 2008). We enjoyed sitting out at these beaches, the smell of the seasalt, the warm breezes, and our stories. We even went up a little further into Me for a late lunch that day. Remember the icecream cone we got on the way home from ME that day, Mom? That home made orange pineapple from the dairy stand that made their own icecream? It was heaped higher than the 16oz. cup it was served in- for just $3.50. Thank goodness we ordered the small!! It took us about 45 minutes to finish our icecream, all the while saying, this is too much. This is just too much. And before we knew it, we polished it off!
Mom, I will miss our little road trips together, our precious, precious times together, and your stories. I look over to the passenger seat for my trusted and beloved co-pilot and just find Benny and friends sitting there. They may not talk to me (they're teddy bears) very much, but I assure you I'll be talking to them ALOT!!
Mom, I will surely miss you, and until we meet again, smile, smile, smile!!!
Through God's grace, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Phil 4:13). I thank God for every day He has given you to share with all of us who knew you and love you.
As it is written on the stone, "I love you most". That settles that!! :-)
Just joking. There is no most when it comes to loving you. We all loved you to the moon, and back!!
Mom, you will certainly be here with me in thought, but most assuredly in my heart.
Your Loving Daughter, Bertsie :-)

Mom,
I've been blessed with 53 years of your love! I am so happy that we had that time together. All of us 'children' had a wonderful childhood and grew into the adults we are today due to your unconditional love and support for us and our extended family (grandchildren/cousins/aunts and uncles) and friends. Your friends became ours and our friends became yours. You will forever live on in our hearts and we will pass on the memories and stories as best we can. I hope I have captured some of your goodness to pass on to others. I will love you and remember you forever. You are my heart. Brian and Aaron will surely miss you, and little Caleb will know you when we all meet together again. True love never dies... we all love you mom.

My sympathy to the Schwend family. Keith means so much to our family and People's Baptist Church, and it was my pleasure to meet Mrs. Schwend, Elaine and Roberta. We had a great time, and they were having a great visit to SC and GA with yard sales and the Georgia Aquarium and eating out. All three made a memorable impression on me - they loved to laugh and have fun!
