Marian French Obituary

Marian Elva (South) French, 81, of Hopkinton, NH, and Meredith, NH died peacefully on Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at her home, after a courageous battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease) with her loving family at her side.

Marian was born in Pittsburgh, PA, the daughter of the late Furman & Elva (Cameron) South. She was a graduate of Cornell University Class of 1948. She previously resided for many years in Shrewsbury, MA. She volunteered at the Concord Hospital in Concord, NH and the Memorial Hospital in Worcester, MA and was a substitute teacher in the Shrewsbury MA schools.

An avid swimmer, she was passionate about spending time at her island home on Lake Winnipesaukee. Her greatest joy however, was spending time with her family. Mrs. French was a member of St. Theresa Church, Henniker NH.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Herbert S. French Jr, of Hopkinton, NH; 2 sons, Herbert S. French III & his wife Cynthia, of Boylston, MA, David C. French & his wife Colleen, of New Hampton, NH; 1 daughter, Susan C. French Hull & her husband Rocky, of Royalton, VT, a daughter-in-law, Jacqueline French of Malibu Beach, CA, wife of Marian's son, Thomas S. French, MD who predeceased her in 2005 and who also valiantly fought ALS for 9 years; 2 brothers, Richard South, of Pittsburgh, PA; Furman South III, of Sewickley, PA; 1 sister, Helen Straub, of Allison Park, PA; 4 grandchildren, Taylor, Lauren, Cameron, & Lily; as well as many nieces & nephews and a dedicated group of loving caregivers who made it possible for Marian to remain in her own home, living with her family despite Lou Gehrig's disease.

A celebration of Marian's life will be held on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at 11 AM in St. Theresa Church in Henniker, NH, The Rev Mark Dollard & Rev Gordan Crouch will officiate. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date.
