Francis Flynn Obituary

Francis J. Flynn, Jr., 88, formerly of Country Club Boulevard, died Wednesday, July 2, 2008, in the Odd Fellows Home.

His wife of 50 years, Mary (Noonan) Flynn, died in 2000. He leaves two daughters, Karen M. Larson and her fiancé David Gouin of Worcester and Mary Ellen Mayo and her husband Robert of Florida; a son, Fran Flynn of Worcester; a brother, John Flynn of Worcester; 4 granddaughters; and nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Barbara J. Flynn in 1950 and 3 sisters, Gertrude M. Casey, Catherine M. Gardiner, and Elizabeth R. Parent. Another brother, Marine CPL Walter M. Flynn, died of wounds received in action in 1950 in North Korea.

He was born in Worcester, son of Catherine (Wall) and Francis J. Flynn, Sr., and was a graduate of Commerce High School. Cpl. Flynn served in the United States Army during WWII. He was a member of the 30th Infantry Division and participated in their heroic defense of Mortain, France in Aug. 1944. This was during the Normandy Campaign and halted a major German counteroffensive. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Silver Star, a Combat Infantrymen's Badge, and the Presidential Unit Citation. He later received the Purple Heart after being wounded by a mortar round in Aachen, Germany in Oct. 1944. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

After the war, he returned home and worked at the former Leland Gifford Co., and later for several years at the Worcester Post Office. He was appointed to the Worcester Fire Dept. in 1961 as a fire alarm operator and dispatcher. He retired in 1981. Franny had excelled as a candlepin bowler for many years and won the former Worcester Telegram city-wide tournament in 1948. In later times, he loved going out to play Bingo. A devoted father and family man, he will be greatly missed. As a young boy growing up in worcester, my parents bought me a scanner, and I was quickly hooked. I remember hoping also at 6 pm every evening when firealarm did the "6 oclock test" that franny would be on the radio that night.. I have fond memories of a man I never knew, but felt as though I did.... Truly sorry for your loss,

Our dads were friends, alley combatants and both were T&G winners. I watched many a match, both in the City League and 20th Century League and they were 2 of the best.
My condolences to the family, Ken,Jr

Karen, Maryellen & Jay---Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time--he will be missed. Grampa will miss his "big brother". Those two have seen it all! Your Dad always had a smile on his face whenever I saw him--never a bad word to say about anyone or a mean bone in his body. He just loved his family and that was always so obvious. I can't tell you how many times he would zip by me going the other way on Clark Street--off on errands! If you blinked--you would miss him! Our love and prayers.

Dear Pop,

I have no words at this moment to express just how much you mean to me. Words fail to give proper meaning to the amount of love that you have shown me since I was a little girl. To tell you that "I Love You" seems like such little words to describe just how much I love you. Thank you for taking me in when I needed a place, Thank you for playing wiffle ball with us kids when we were small. Thank you for making me laugh...thank you for helping me cry less...thank you for all the sunday dinners at apartment 215....I will treasure these and many others like them for the rest of my life. you are a great man pop-o and I love you more than words can say. thank you for teaching me to enjoy my childhood before it was gone...thank you for picking me up from school and taking me out to get fish and chips every friday...(no skin jessica...tell them you don't want skin...)thank you for teaching me about kindness...thank you for teaching me that I should help people every chance I get. thank you for the fire truck rides...thank you for loving me unconditionally...thank you for serving this country with honour, courage and great spirit. thank you for teching me the value of freedom...and helping me to not take it for granted... thank god for you...rest in peace buddy
