Harry Miller Obituary
Harry E. Miller, Jr., 84, of 16 West St., died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, July 21, 2008, in his home after an illness. His wife of 58 years, Helen C. (Weagle) Miller, died on June 18, 2008.
He is survived by two sons: Harry E. Miller, III of Northborough, and Kenneth R. Miller of Douglas; two daughters: Arlene M. Maltais of Erwin, NC, and Melinda A. Rollins and her husband Michael, with whom he lived, and by whom he was lovingly cared for; three sisters: Mary Donadio of Millbury, Alice Ferris of Upton, and Bessie Morgan of Auburn; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Samual and John Miller, and a sister, Edna Miller.
Harry was born and raised in Worcester, son of Harry E. Miller, Sr., and Bessie (Betts) Miller Boucher. He was a resident of Berlin for over 50 years.
Before retiring in 1989, Harry worked for many years as a machinist for tool and die maker Elbro Tool of Auburn. Previously, he worked as a Baker at the College of the Holy Cross, and delivered the Sunday Telegram to homes in Berlin and surrounding towns, for several years.
Until 2001, Harry was an Emergency Dispatcher for the Town of Berlin. He was an EMT for the Berlin Rescue Squad, a member of the Berlin Fire Department, and a part time Police Officer for the Town of Berlin. He was a member and past commander of the American Legion of Berlin, and the Captain of its firing squad. Additionally, he served on the Board of Trade, was a former member of the Berlin Cemetery Commission, and was a member of the Berlin Historical Society.
Every day for the past forty years, Harry raised and lowered the Flag in the center of Berlin. He enjoyed his ham radios, and was a member of the Worcester Amateur Radio League. In 1953, he participated in the search and rescue efforts following the Worcester Tornado, as a member of the Civil Defense team.
He was a US Navy Veteran of WWII, and a recipient of the Purple Heart, serving from 1941-1945; a US Navy Reserves Veteran from 1945-1957; and a US Army Reserves Veteran from 1979-1985, working as a Medic, and volunteering at Marlborough Hospital.
Harry's funeral will be held on Wednesday, July 23, 2008, with a service at 10:00 a.m. in the McNally & Watson Funeral Home, 304 Church St., Clinton. Burial will follow in South Cemetery, Berlin. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, July 22, 2008, from 5:00-8:00 p.m., in the funeral home.
