Andrew Johnston Obituary

Andrew W. "Andy" Johnston, 55, of 14 Oran St., died Wednesday, July 30, 2008, in UMass Memorial Medical Center- Memorial Campus, after a short illness.

He leaves his wife of 34 years, Carol A. (Brooks) Johnston; a daughter, Karrie A. Johnston of Cherry Valley; a son, Peter A. Johnston of Worcester; his mother, Catherine (Deonesopoulos) Johnston of Worcester; a sister, Denise F. Batchelder of Worcester; a brother, Paul S. Johnston and his wife Carol of Auburn; two grandchildren: Riley W. Johnston and Anthony A. Leite, both of Cherry Valley; and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Peter Starzyk, died in 1964. He was born and raised in Worcester, son of the late Andrew R. Johnston, attended Worcester Boys Trade High School, and lived here all of his life.

Andy was a Lieutenant with the Massachusetts Department of Corrections. He worked at the State Prison in Gardner for 16 years. He then transferred to the new Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, where he worked until retiring due to illness. In 1999, he was honored as the Department of Corrections employee of the year. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren who were the light of his life.

CALLING HOURS will be from 5 to 8 P.M. on FRIDAY, Aug. 1, in KELLY FUNERAL HOME, 154 Lincoln St. A FUNERAL MASS will be held at 10 A.M. on SATURDAY, Aug. 2, in ST. JOAN OF ARC CHURCH, 570 Lincoln St., followed by burial in Hope Cemetery. Directions and condolence book available at
