Claire Cotton Obituary

Claire E. (McRae) Cotton, 93, died Saturday, August 2, 2008 at the University Commons Nursing Care Center.

She was born October 7, 1914 in Athol, Massachusetts, daughter of G. William McRae and Minnie D. (Tatro) McRae. She was a graduate of Athol High School.

She was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Alfred J. Cotton in January and by her sister, Ruth (McRae) Callahan. She leaves two sons, Alfred J. Cotton, Jr. of Worcester and John W. Cotton and his wife Michelle of South Dennis; two grandsons and five great-grandchildren.

Prior to her marriage, she was employed in the Welfare Department for the Town of Athol. As a young homemaker, she was a den mother for the Cub Scouts. For many years, she was an active volunteer with the Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Worcester and the YWCA Great Books Study Group.

During the late 1960's and 1970's, she was campaign manager for the successful Worcester City Council campaigns of her husband and School Committee campaigns of her son, Alfred.

The funeral and burial in Gethsemane Cemetery in Athol will be private. There are no calling hours. The Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester, is directing arrangements.
