Paul Shapter Obituary

Paul W. Shapter, 71, of Worcester and Plymouth NH, a man of integrity and a great sense of humor who valued all he met, passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 6th in the arms of his devoted wife, Connie.

Paul was born in Philadelphia, PA, on May 26th 1937. He grew up in Wayland, graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. Paul moved to the Worcester area over 25 years ago where he met his cherished wife of 22 years, Attorney Constance A. (Gentile) Morrison.

Over his employed years, Paul worked more than 15 years for the Worcester Housing Authority as Chief Financial Officer before retiring. During his time as CFO, Paul was honored by the residents of Great Brook Valley for his individual work with them for the financial betterment of their lives. He then worked for U.S. Government Agency's; Homeland Security, FEMA, and DMORT (Disaster Mortuary Team). Paul and Connie also volunteered their time with the American Red Cross, traveling to disaster areas around the world. He was the administrator for Morrison International Educational Associates, arranging for lectures on Health Care, Law and Ethics around the world.

Paul was active with his wife for the Massachusetts Veterans Shelter in Worcester. In the early days of the Shelter, Paul worked tirelessly helping and advising veterans with their yearly and past tax matters. At onetime, Paul performed work in South Africa; teaching for the Mandela Government after Mandela was released from detention.

Several years ago, Paul was appointed by then Worcester Juvenile Court Judge Luis Perez, to be a baby cuddler for children who had failure to thrive at Memorial Hospital.

Paul's famous statements were; "ALWAYS leave a place better than when you found it" and "Polite and civil behavior cost nothing to exhibit it at all times."

He is survived by his devoted and cherished wife of 22 years, Dr. Constance A. (Gentile) Morrison, Esq.; his three children: Kevin Shapter of Marshfield, Tracy Fisher of McDonough Georgia, and Laura Denman of Puyallup, Washington; a sister, Katherine Shapter of Auburn; six grandchildren; several cousins, including his devoted and caring cousin, Richard P. Williams.

Paul was an extraordinary man who touched many lives across the continents. Paul was honored several times by Governors across the country including, Guam and New Hampshire for his work during disasters. He was an avid reader and was writing a historical novel going back 40 thousand years ago and taking the reader through the mysteries of the 24 century.

He was active in the Loon Society of NH, an organization involved in the protection and counting of these Majestic Ancient Birds. He was a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, the Worcester Lodge 168, Order Sons of Italy, and the Rotary Clubs of Worcester and Plymouth. Paul was appointed by the City Council in the early nineties as a Director of the Worcester Public Library for 9 years, during his tenure the newly remodeled library came to be. Paul was a Class 2 canoeist. He loved hiking the beloved White Mountains, skiing, snowshoeing and golfing. Paul also loved the National Park System and traveled to many across the Country with his wonderful children. The last one he and his wife, Connie traveled to was the Joshua Tree National Park in 29 Palms, CA where he spent winters. He loved playing Gin Rummy with his father-in-law, Larry Gentile, whom he considered one of his best friends. Paul and Larry would play for hours at home, while on vacation, and at Paul and Connie's home in the White Mountains. The grill would be on and so would the marathon card games.

Funeral services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours; Memorial contributions may be made to the Massachusetts Veterans Inc., 69 Grove Street, Worcester, Massachusetts 01605. The MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. is honored to assist the family with arrangements. This extraordinary man was loved by many and will be sadly missed.

Connie - It is late and I cannot sleep. I thought I'd get on the computer and check a few things. I saw your email again, but hadn't seen the guest book. Connie - we both lost a precious soul when we lost our spouses. I often think, like others - what words of wisdom can be offered? Then one day, several years ago, I thought of something. A young man, a friend of both Patsy's and mine had died senselessly. It occurred to me that every passing is ennobled if we, the living, can learn and grow from it. So, for example, if someone died from a lack of safety, we ennoble that passing if we advocate, create and embrace safety. So those are my words of wisdom. Somehow, we, the living, can imbue a passing with value if we can learn and grow from it. Many hugs and fond thoughts of you and Paul, both. I never imagined from his quiet demeanor the richness of his life and interests.

I just learned of cousin Paul's passing today. My condolences to you Connie and all the family.

My last contact with Paul was several years ago via Email. I had discovered that he was a ham radio operator [I am also]and decided to email him since we hadn't seen or spoke to each other in many many years. We had some very nice email exchanges and did get a little bit caught up on each others lives.

In the amateur radio world, Paul is now known as a silent key. Not to worry though for he has been given a new key, opening up new doors to eternal peace and love in the hands of God. Rest in peace cousin.

Connie, At a nursing conference in Concord a couple of months ago, you shared with me and another nurse (Barbara) your concerns and worries about Paul's illness. I am so very sorry to hear about your loss.
I read Paul's obit with great interest, and even awe, at what he (and also you) have accomplished over the years. You have so many wonderful memories and I know they will always stay with you.
You will recall that I met Paul at one of your legal-nursing conferences a few years ago and we all had lunch together. Long story short: after back and forth introductory-type questions, we found out that when I was 6 yrs. old, my parents bought his parents' home in Wayland!! What a surprise; we laughed at the craziness of such a small world experience. And, my sister, Linda was very good friends with Kay (as she was called at the time).
Please know that I'm here for you if you feel the need to talk....and I know that I'm far from alone in making that offer. You have many, many friends so this might be the time to call upon them to help you during these very difficult times. Sara

You will always have those treasures in your heart wherever you go. You will remain in my prayers. With love - janice and family

Dear Connie,
I will remember the many contributions Paul made to the VRB, his dedication to the financial stability of the association, and working beside him on the board. I thank you both for the friendship you offered Ed and me. I enjoyed hearing about his FEMA and RedCross work , his writing, and travels with you around the globe. His humor was unique, subtle and fun; his respect for others immense; his passion to give seemed endless, as did his patience. Connie, may you find joy in your memories, comfort from friends and family, and peace that Paul is resting. Fondly, Judy Blomquist Ashland NH and Chester NH

My dear Sushi girl -
I sat quietly at my desk today after hearing of your loss - and cried soft tears. I know first hand, the love you and Paul shared after spending treasured time in Africa with the two of you. We laughed at all times, and Paul never flinched at the most critical moments....remember the elephants? The combined spirit of you two was a bright light for many - especially me.

I will continue to think of you Connie, and send all positive energy your way, as I know your heart is surely breaking, to lose this sweet, sweet man.

Remember, you are dearly loved my friend - Lyn

I am very saddened to read of Paul's passing. When I worked as a temp with the Housing Authority 15 years ago, Paul was always supportive of my work under his supervision. His sense of humor was extraordinarily refreshing. He was also the smartest man I have ever met, with a wealth of knowledge on innumerable subjects. I always wished I would run into him again someday to tell him how much I admired him. My deepest sympathies go out to you Connie, and your entire family.

Although I did nor personally know Paul, his obituary speaks for itself and the imprint that he has made on society. We have all been given a mission and I am sure that today a wonderful God is saying," Mission accomplished, well done good and faithful servant."

I had the great pleasure of spending this past winter with Paul and his wife Connie in California. Paul was a a dynamic wonderful human being and so kind and thougtful. He and Connie had so many wonderful stories and adventures to share from travels across the world helping many vulnerable populations with red cross and disaster activities.
His sense of humor and knowlege was very uplifting.
He will be greatly missed.
