Henry Salem Obituary

Henry R. Salem of Gilbert St., died Sunday, August 17, 2008 at his home.

He leaves his wife of 62 years, Catherine M. (Kelly) Salem; four sons, Richard Salem and his wife Janet of Leicester, John Salem of Warren, David Salem of West Brookfield and Robert Salem and his wife Jennifer of Gloucester; three daughters, Nancy Salem and her husband Alan Drake, Martha Leasca and her husband George and Heather Salem all of West Brookfield; two brothers, Ernest Salem of West Brookfield and Robert Salem of North Brookfield; one sister, Helen Linehan of Sharon; six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Arthur Salem in 1958 and a brother Richard Salem in 1996. He was born in Worcester son of the late Arthur G. and Sarah (Schuhan) Salem and lived 84 years in North Brookfield. He was a graduate of North Brookfield High School and attended Boston University.

Mr. Salem was an entrepreneur of many local businesses including Hardwick Laminators and H.R. Salem Transport and the founder and principle of the historic Salem Cross Inn in West Brookfield which he owned and operated with his brothers and was fondly know as the whip cream guy.

He was very active with politics and local government and was a trustee of the Country Bank for Savings. He also was a member of the Petersham Golf Course, a 61 year member of the Hayden Lodge of Masons and member of the Melha Shriners.

A Funeral Service for Henry will be held Thursday, August 21, 2008 at 11:00 AM in the First Congregational Church in North Brookfield. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, August 20, 2008 from 4 to 8 PM in the Varnum Funeral Home, Inc., 43 East Main St., West Brookfield. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery in North Brookfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the North Brookfield Emergency Squad, P. O. Box 73, North Brookfield, MA 01535 or to the West Brookfield Rescue Squad, Inc., P. O. Box 540, West Brookfield, MA 01585.

The towns of West and North Brookfield have lost a great and kind citizen. When I travel, I always tell people who ask that I am from West Brookfield, you know, where Salem Cross is..and they know just what I am talking about. I have lost a friend and someone who also was one of my late father's best friends, and I might say, someone who is responsible for a few of my additional "pounds" thanks to extra helpings of roast beef and other goodies!

Nancy,
I was very sorry to hear about your father. I will always remember the wonderful events held at Salem for Wrighrs. Henry always made everyone feel welcome, gave everyoe that extra spoonful of whipped cream and was the perfect host. He was a real gentleman and will be missed.
