Lucille Layden Obituary

Lucille (Timbers) Layden, 82, of Shrewsbury, died unexpectedly Saturday, August 23, 2008 at St. Vincent's Hospital. Her husband Frederick T. Layden died in 1996.

She is survived by her children: Kathy Blumenthal of Boylston, Maribeth Gentile, of Sturbridge, Frederick T. Layden, and his wife Cathy, of Fremont, CA, Col. William Layden and his wife Pam, of San Antonio, TX, Maureen Layden, MD, and her husband John Loughnane, MD, of Quincy, MA; her loving grandchildren: Simon Blumenthal of Boylston, Jennifer Gentile, PsyD, of Brookline, Erika McPhee, MD, and her husband Jamie McPhee, MD, of Worcester, Jeffrey Gentile and his wife Erica of Pembroke, NH, Michael Gentile of Seattle, WA, Tracy Layden of Fremont, CA, Thomas Layden, and Jonathan Layden both of San Antonio, TX; and her great grandchildren: Aidan McPhee and Jared Gentile. She also leaves a brother William C. Timbers and his wife Estee of Solon, OH, and a sister-in-law Mary Layden of Shrewsbury. She will be missed by her dear friends Michael, Gail, Michael, Jr, and Courtney Kenefick; and her beloved companion Miss-Miss.

She was born in Cleveland, OH, the daughter of the late William and Catherine (Clark) Timbers. She attended Central Catholic High School in Cleveland, OH.

She worked as a Laboratory Technician at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester for many years. She also worked as a nanny for several families in the Shrewsbury area, fondly known as Nanny-Lu.

She was a long time member of St. Mary's Church in Shrewsbury. She was a member of the Tuesday Club, and the Shrewsbury Businesswoman's Club. She was a Red Cross Volunteer for more than 25 years. She served as a Shrewsbury EMT, was a member and leader of the Girl Scouts, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and volunteered as a greeter at Shrewsbury High School.

She will be remembered for her vivacious personality and quick wit. She was infinitely proud of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was a sage listener and a loving spirit. Even though we know her laughter will no longer brighten our days, we have our memories, and we know we will be together again.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Wednesday from 4-7 PM in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main Street. Her funeral will be held from the funeral home with a Mass celebrated Thursday at 10:00 AM in St. Mary's Church, 640 Main St. Shrewsbury. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105 or to St. Mary's Church 640 Main St. Shrewsbury, MA 01545. For Lucille's guestbook and online memorial or for directions visit www.
