Dear Gianna and Jeff and the Nixon Family
You are in our hearts and in our prayers, and we wish we could be with you all. While we did not know Bill well, we experienced his humor and love and deep caring for his family. We feel privileged to have had the opportunity to know him, even briefly. You know that good memories will sustain you even during the most difficult times. He loved you all so much, as we do here in Rochester. All our love, Aunt Elaine and Uncle Malcolm, Maya and Matthew

Gianna, Steve and Paul,
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your father. Every time I visit my parents on Muster Lane, I look up at the Nixon house to see if I can see your father so I can wave to him or check out what kind of cool classic car he is driving. I know my parents enjoyed having Bill for a neighbor for over 30 years on Muster Lane. We're going to miss him and want you to know that our thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time.
Love,
Holly Osella (Card)

Dear Nixon Family,

I’m an old shipmate of Bill’s from the Skate back in the mid-1970’s. I was also a Machinist’s Mate...but from “the other end”...a Nuc...and still just a NUB when we met, and, though I’ve had many since, whenever I think of the term “COB”, it’s Bill’s wizened, but always pleasant face that comes to my mind!

I only did 8 years, and also pulled four deterrent patrols on a boomer, but the Skate was my favorite because of the family that the crew was. We steamed a lot...wavin’ the flag...ol’ girl that the Skate was...and we saw a lot...endured a lot...pulled each other through a lot. Bein’ a submariner didn’t earn you many “casual” working relationships!!!

And fundamental to the overall boat’s functioning was the COB. True, he didn’t make the gear do what it did...or make any of us more proficient with that...but he was the backbone of advocacy and morale...judge ‘n’ jury, on the spot...keepin’ things from gettin’ to the real point of judge ‘n’ jury with his experienced interventions. And he also organized some parties that were “LOLLAPALOOZAS” in the days before “LOLLAPALOOZAS” was! In short, the COB was an MVP...a singularly invaluable member of the crew...and Bill was one heck of a COB...a proud and valued member of any “Goat Locker”!

Therefore, I understand the hole left behind...regardless forewarning...by any brother...father...gran’pa, let alone someone I knew to be as influential a man as was Bill; and so I pray this helps some wee bit...to allow...enable…the grief! So truly sorry to hear about Bill. Definitely keepin’ y’all in fond prayers that Christ hold you close in this trying time!

When my mother died, even after a years-long battle with cancer, I was shattered by the loss…inconsolable…she was my mentor! BUT, "If your faith assures you she's in heaven, then what are the tears all about?!?" I hold eternity with God a precious, cherished prize...but...in the interim, the answer lies below...and believe me...I understand the tears often are not nearly as casual as this implies!

SELFISH TEARS
(I eulogize my beloved mother - March, 1989)

Today we cry...must admit they're selfish tears.
You see...our faith assures your journey's done.
But it's not for you we mourn, at all, my dear;
It's for those of us you've left behind...alone!!!

We share your joy...share your happiness at rest,
Your painful fears now for forever stilled.
You've fought the good fight, passed the final test,
But you've left behind a hole that can't be filled!!!

So, until we each rejoin you some someday,
And, while your memory buoys us through those years,
We'll miss you...but continue on our way,
And, from time to time, we'll cry our selfish tears!!!

Ray Hamilton (c) March 19, 1989

My sincerest condolences...sympathetic prayers,

Fair winds and followin’ seas, mate!
