Mary Slocum Obituary

Mary (Keegan) Slocum, age 91, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family at the Cardigan Nursing Home, Scituate, on Saturday, September 6, 2008. Born on March 20, 1917 in Norwood, she was the daughter of Bernard Keegan and Mary (Flaherty) Keegan. She was the beloved wife of the late Norman Lewis Slocum, and the beloved mother of the late Norman B. Slocum.

She is survived by her children, John Slocum and his wife Penny of Sutton, Paul and his wife Mildred of Mountaintop, PA, Mary E. Slocum and her husband Antun Domic of Palo Alto California, Philip Slocum of Groveton, NH, Deborah A. Slocum and her husband Walter Steinkrauss of Marshfield, and Martha Slocum, widow of the late Norman B Slocum. Her grandchildren, Gregory P Slocum, Joshua and Sarah Slocum, Caroline and Emma Steinkrauss, and Laurel Cerrud also survive her.

Mrs. Slocum grew up in Jaffrey, New Hampshire and graduated from the Katherine Gibbs School of Boston. Mrs. Slocum worked for a number of years as an executive secretary. She and her late husband raised six children in Sutton where Mrs. Slocum was active in education serving as the chair of the Sutton School Committee for a number of years. A member of the St Mark's parish, she was a Eucharistic minister. She served as a member of the Worcester County Extension Advisory Council and the Catholic Diocese of Worcester Building Committee. She was a member of the Hillside Club and the Sutton Quilters. She was an avid gardener and quilter, fond of her pets and proud of her Irish heritage.

Her Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13th in St. Mark's Church, 356 Boston Rd. in Sutton, MA. Burial will be in Howard Cemetery in Sutton. The family will receive friends and relatives from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church, prior to the Funeral Mass. Mulhane Home for Funerals in Millbury is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark's Church, 356 Boston Rd., Sutton, MA 01590 or to the Sutton Education Foundation Trust, P.O. Box 63, Sutton, MA 01590.
