Mary Tanona Obituary

Mary H. (Luby) Tanona, 88, of Worcester, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2008, in the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center. Her husband of 42 years, Joseph J. Tanona, Sr., died in 1998.

She leaves two sons, Joseph J. Tanona, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth Tanona of Paxton, and William J. Tanona of Colchester, Vt.; two daughters, Mary A. Tanona and Susan E. Tanona, both of Worcester; two grandsons, Joseph J. Tanona III and Matthew Tanona, and many nephews and nieces. Her brothers, Owen, James and William Luby, and her sister, Alice Alexander, predeceased her.

She was born in Worcester, daughter of Owen H. and Helen C. (Moran) Luby. She graduated from Commerce High School and Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing.

Mrs. Tanona was a registered nurse in Worcester for 38 years, retiring in 1994. She was a surgical nurse at Worcester City Hospital where she was on the staff for 30 years. From 1986 to 1994, she was a supervising surgical nurse at Fairlawn Hospital.

She was a member of Christ the King Church and the City Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Assn.

She enjoyed skating at Elm Park and was a speed skater in her earlier years. She also enjoyed singing throughout her entire life.

Calling hours are Sunday, Sept. 21, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. The funeral will be Monday, Sept. 22 from the funeral home with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant St., Worcester. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center, 559 Plantation St., Worcester 01605.

My condolences to Joe, Liz, Mary, Susan, and Bill, and Joey and Matt - your mother and grandmother was a very special person and I will always remember her kindnesses to me when I was so far from my own family at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
