Marland Taylor Obituary

Marland E. "Mal" Taylor, 94, of 172 Fairhraven Rd. died Saturday Sept. 20 in UMass Memorial Med. Center.

His wife, Marion C. (Obey) Taylor, died in 1998. He leaves a daughter, Barbara L. Reynolds and her husband Gregory with whom he lived, four granddaughters, Christine J. Gasparik and her husband Chris Tobin, Susan L. O'Connor and her husband David, Karen L. Marini and her husband Anthony, and Cheryl A. Cleary and her husband Edward, two step-grandsons, John Reynolds of Greenville, Pa., and Daniel Reynolds of Akron, Ohio, 4 great grandsons, 3 great granddaughters, 4 step-great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and daughter-in-law Susan B. Taylor of Rutland. He was predeceased by his son, Robert. He also leaves his friend, Rita Ringgard of Rutland, and many other friends and acquaintances.

Born in Worcester, son of James E. and Maude H. (Hulbert) Taylor, he graduated from North High, and served 5 years in the Air Force 1419th Base Unit as Fire Chief at the U.S. air base in Rome, Italy during WWll, continuing in the Air Force Reserve after the war. He served 28 years in the Worcester Fire Dept. with Ladder 6 at the Greendale Station, retiring in 1978. An accomplished trumpet and bugle player, he played taps in all the Worcester cemeteries for veterans funerals. He won the New England Bugle Championship in 1937 and 1938. He played trumpet in the De Molay Marching Band for many years. He was a member of Guiding Light Lodge of Masons (formerly Athelston Lodge) for 48 years. He loved to travel and cook, visit his cottage in Maine, and make beef stew and apple pies.

A funeral service will be held at 10 am. Thursday Sept. 25 in CASWELL-KING FUNERAL HOME 474 Grove St. with the Rev. Michael H. Kerrigan of Peaks Island, Maine presiding. Burial will be in Worcester Co. Memorial Park. Calling hours will be from 4-7 pm. Wed. Sept. 24 in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Worcester Firefighters Memorial Fund, or the Shriner's Hospital for Children 516 Carew St. Springfield, Ma. 01104
