Edward McManus Obituary

Edward J. McManus, 78, of formerly of Manchaug Road, died Sunday, November 16, 2008, at the Blaire House of Worcester. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Paula A. (Burns) McManus of Sturbridge; a stepson, Llewellyn Squier and his wife Carla of Douglas; a stepdaughter, Antonia Squier of Sturbridge; two sisters, Elizabeth Garofoli of Shrewsbury and Paula Palmer of Sterling; six step grandchildren, Nathan H. Tong, Marilyn T. Squier, and Joel Squier-Donnan, all of Sturbridge, and Andrew J. Squier, Colin C. Squier, and Kylie M. Squier, all of Douglas; and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his first wife of 26 years, Diana (Andreau) McManus, who died in 1980; a brother, John B. McManus Jr. of Worcester; and two sisters, Anna McKone of North Carolina and Alice Bernard of Shrewsbury. He was born in Worcester, the son of the late John B. and Anna (Maciejiwski) McManus Sr., and lived in Worcester before moving to Sutton in 1959. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. McManus was a truck driver for Lombard Brothers in Shrewsbury for 35 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of St. Mark's Church in Sutton. Mr. McManus was a member of the Dudley-Gendron American Legion Post 414 in Sutton and a member of the Singletary Rod and Gun Club in Oxford. He was an assessor for the town of Sutton for 12 years and was a member of the Teamsters Local 170 in Worcester. He was always willing to help someone and was active in many activities, including playing Santa Claus at Singletary Rod and Gun Club and the American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, coaching Little League in Sutton, playing softball in with the Over the Hill Gang, and loved his grandchildren most of all.

A funeral will be held at on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, from Paradis Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oxford, followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Roch's Church, 332 Main St., Oxford. Burial will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are Tuesday, November 18, 2008, from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Flowers may be sent or memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
