Helen was our next-door neighbor for many years; however, a half-dozen years before she and George moved into the late Ben Fogg's house, I knew her as the friendly co-manager of the Crossroads Restaurant in West Boylston, where my parents would take me on Saturdays for a hot dog when I was a boy. Helen was a private person but very opinionated. She loved to study ancient Greek philosophy and apply its ethical standards to today's politicians. Helen also liked to discuss the messages that thoughtful films conveyed. She always had a ready smile and would hospitably open her house to her friends and relatives at a moment's notice, serving them a Danish, a cup of coffee, and her unique spin on the day's events. The day before the national election, she told me, "I hope they give him a chance," as she hoped that Barack Obama would be elected president. As far as I know, she made it to the polls and cast her vote for him. She was without question delighted at the outcome of the election. We are much saddened by her absence.--Jeff Long
