Kathy, Dale, Megan, and Ryan~
Words alone cannot express how truly devastated we are and sorry we are about the loss of Michael. Kathy, what I'll take with me in my memories of Michael are his visits to you at school. He'd surprise you with a visit, be upbeat and have a smile...he was far from shy or embarrassed about wanting to visit his Mom at work. I loved that. He'd smile, you'd smile, and it made me smile. Someday, when we have a family, I only hope I get those smiling surprise visits from my child as you did. It may have seemed like a small thing at the time, but it sure was a great thing. He loved you so much, and this was one of his ways in showing it.

My thoughts of Michael go back to his time in my fifth grade class. Oh, how he challenged what he read and learned from such an early age. He wanted truth. He would raise his hand and question text. He "got" things early and sought to find something he could trust in his government and leadership, and he understood concepts beyond his years. I remember his love of music and guitar. I know he celebrated the individual. Recently, I met up with his mom at a staff training (prior to moving out of the area) and she updated me on Michael's excitement for the election. He was so happy to be voting in his first election. She'd remarked that he read the books by Obama and was eager to be a part of this election. A fellow classmate of his contacted me of his death. The group that shared time in fifth grade together had a special bond. I will never forget his role in the play Oliver Twist. How he paced back and forth behind the scenes... so nervous, yet determined. And he did it so well. The images of him in my mind will always stay... so playful and ready to challenge. The "comeback" kid... he always had a quick yet deep response. You, Michael, have been a gift. You fought against conformity and following what others do. I admire those qualities in you, and so many of your peers learned from you. Thank you for touching my life and the life of other teachers who benefited from both teaching you and learning from you. Love, Karen Smith
