Lois Tarby Obituary
Lois Chapman Tarby, 93, a resident of Briarwood, Worcester, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on November 14, 2007. She was the wife of the late Walter "Tiger" Tarby, who died in 2004. They lived in Southbury, CT for 40 years prior to Walter's death. She was born in Orono, Maine the daughter of the late Professor Lawrence and Louise Chapman of Princeton. She grew up in Newton, Wellesley and Princeton. Mrs. Tarby graduated from Andover Academy, Bryant & Strattan Business College, and the Boston Cooking School. Prior to marrying Walter she was a dietitian for the Cherry Lawn School in Darien, CT and then the Coldstone Restaurants in Boston. Subsequently, she managed two restaurants for the Hotel Statler in Boston. She and Walter owned and operated Old Drive Package Store in Seymour Connecticut for 25 years. She and he were the founding members and chaired the Seymour Pumpkin Festival for 16 years. The proceeds were used for the beautification of Seymour. She was one of the founding members of the Seymour Garden Club and the Seymour Newcomers Club. She had a keen interest and expertise in gardening and was active in the Seymour Women's Club prior to moving to Southbury. After her retirement, she and Walter ran the Friendly Senior Travelers from their home in Southbury for 15 years, taking seniors on many enjoyable trips.
Besides her son, Lawrence C. Greene and his wife Marcia of Princeton, she leaves her sister-in-law, Betty Benner of Woodbridge CT, six grandchildren, Lawrence C. Greene Jr. and Sherry Gelinas, both of Massachusetts, Wendy Hurdman of New Jersey, Steven Groome of Ohio, Jonathan Groome of Georgia, and James Groome of North Carolina, and eleven great-grandchildren. Her sister, Anita died several years ago and brother, Charles died in the Battle of Midway, during World War II.
A memorial service with Requiem Eucharist will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 91 Church St., Seymour, CT on Friday, November 30th at 10:30 AM. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery, Seymour.
