Russell Davis Obituary

Russell J. Davis, 94, of Spencer, Mass., died peacefully at UMass Memorial Hospital/University Campus in Worcester, on Monday, December 3, 2007 following an illness. His wife of 62 years, Lottie E. Davis, died in 1999.

He leaves two daughters, Joan Binford and her husband Fred of Beverly, and Donna Zalauskas and her husband Kenneth of Spencer. He also leaves two grandchildren, Sandra Warren, her husband Eric, and Timothy Binford, and four great-grandchildren, Joseph, Dean, and Eva Warren; and Kaitlyn Binford. His two brothers, Richard Davis of Yarmouth, and Robert Davis of Spencer predeceased him.

Russell was born on September 22, 1913 in Spencer, Mass., the son of Welcome and Sarah Davis. He was raised in Brockton, Mass. and graduated from Brockton High School. He worked for Pepsi Cola for over 52 years, retiring from the Charles Copeland Bottling Company in 1994 at the age of 80. In 1978, he and his wife moved to Spencer, Mass.

Russell served his country for three years during WWII as a military policeman in the U.S. Army, and was stationed in England and the Philippines He was a member of North Baptist Church in Brockton for most of his life, serving as a deacon and trustee of the church. After moving to Spencer, he attended the First Congregational Church of Spencer.

Russell enjoyed gardening, especially growing dahlias and gladiolas, and bird watching. He was also a creative and talented carpenter and woodworker and made many pieces of furniture for his family and friends in his retirement. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends at the Leicester and Spencer Senior Centers. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

The family would like to thank the staff at Homestead Hall for the loving and compassionate care that they provided to him over the last seven months.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, December 6, at 11:00 a.m. in the First Congregational Church of Spencer, 205 Main Street, Spencer, Mass. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery with Military Honors. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, December 5, from 4-7 p.m. in Pillsbury Funeral Home, 163 Main Street, Spencer.
