Robin Voorheis Obituary

ROBIN L. VOORHEIS
INTERLAKEN - Robin L. Voorheis, of 8719 Rt. 89, Interlaken (formerly of Cortland and Groton), passed away at home early Saturday morning, May 31, 2008, at the age of 40.
Born in Auburn, New York on August 4, 1967, Robin was the daughter of Harry and Barb Weber of Trumansburg. Robin graduated from the Homer High School, and with tremendous determination later in life, while juggling family and career, earned her Bachelors degree.
She worked at Wendys and Wend Central in Cortland before accepting a Teacher's Aide position at the Groton Elementary School. Robin was clearly in her element while in the classroom harboring a concern for each child like they were her own. When Robin moved from Groton to the Interlaken area seven years ago she continued dedicating herself to teaching children through her Teacher's Aide positions at Franziska Racker Center and later at South Seneca Elementary School. Placing the needs and concerns of others first was an inborn trait that was a deep part of Robin's essence. She nurtured her children, husband, family, and close friends selflessly-giving all, asking nothing in return. In 2008, Robin was awarded the Mamapalooza Motherhood Foundation's "Mother of the Year" award.
Robin had a deep affection for animals, especially horses. She also enjoyed softball, gardening, hunting, and in keeping with the family tradition, camping. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Interlaken and Tompkins Community Action.
In addition to her parents, Robin is survived by her husband, Stacy D. Voorheis; a daughter, Rachel Linda Shorts; one son, Ivan Dominic "Nicky" Shorts; and stepson, Derek James Voorheis; a brother, Harry C. (Jamie) Weber; four sisters, Cheryl (Rick) Reynolds, Kelly (Shawn) Voorheis-Brimhall, Heidi (Scott) Sherwood and Heather (Bill) Hughes; father-in-law, Jim (Rose) Voorheis; mother-in-law, Janet (Elwood) Hulbert; two sisters-in-law, Sheila Voorheis and Susan (Darryl) Griffin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to her many friends who have shown continued support throughout Robin's courageous battle with breast cancer. Through your loving memories Robin will continue to live.
The family will be present to receive friends on Tuesday, June 3, from 5-8 p.m. at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South St., Trumansburg.
Services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 4, at Christ Lutheran Church, County Road 153, Kidder's Landing, Interlaken, with the Rev. Robert Foote officiating.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to make a contribution in Robin's memory are asked to kindly consider the education fund which has been established for Robin's children. To make a contribution to this fund, please make a check payable to: The Robin Voorheis Education Fund and mail to: Tompkins Trust Company, P.O. Box 702, Trumansburg, NY 14886.

To Robin's family:
I cannot believe my eyes, reading about Robin. We were so close in high school, drifted apart a few years later. I called her last Christmas and she told me about her beautiful children, and the wonderful man she planned to marry. She was so happy and you could hear the love in her voice when she talked about them.

I am so sorry for your loss.

I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to all family and friends. Robin Weber was a very dear friend of mine, but we lost touch over the years and I am sorry to say that I was not aware she was ill until it was too late. I worked with her at Wendy's, just her and I at the start, then of course we got each other involved in many years of softball for the Dark Horse Tavern among other places. When I was going through a rough patch, her and Danny took me in as a roommate and then later in life, she let my son and I rent her carriage house behind hers, near the hospital in Cortland, this is who she was to me, always ready to give a helping hand to anyone in need. I did speak with her later on and found out she was engaged and soon to be married again, I am sure her husband is everything thing that she said, kind, caring and great with her kids, she thought the world of you. You all should be very proud of what a wonderful person and mother she truly was, and she will be greatly missed. Please don't ever lose touch with your friends, always make the time. Love you Robin, Bert

I got to know Robin through Kelly. We didn't hang out a whole lot since I live far away but it was enough for me to get to know her and really like her and enjoy the time we spent together. One thing she did that I will never forget and always hold dear - she and Kelly were at some bar (sorry, can't remember the name) where they had live music and people took photos of the crowd that were posted on the internet. So I get an email from Kelly with this link to a photo of her and Robin holding a sign that said "We love you Dan". Kelly said it was Robin's doing. Wow. I was so moved. And I am so sorry and stunned ... at a loss for words...

Dear Family of Robin,
Words cannot express how very sorry we are in the loss of your daughter, your mother, and your wife. She was very special to us at South Seneca Central School, and the friendships we all made, that seems would last a lifetime. She was an amazing presence amongst us, and the "little things" she did always made us smile. We had a running joke that Robin got an M.B.A. (Master of Bulletin Board Art) and her creativity she showed in putting together the children's art displays. (everything was perfectly lined up, that few of us could master, and artfully decorated)
We too, struggle in loosing her, she was one of a kind, in the most amazing ways. May you have family and friends that keep you together, during this difficult time, and love each other everyday. You are in my families thoughts and prayers.

I saw Robin recently. We were able to share a hug. I remember her quick step, nice smile, and her gentle way with the children in her care. When she was at work she didn't complain about her health. She was here to work. I have missed seeing her at school, and my heart is sad, but I am happy to have known her.
