MILES THOMAS
DECOTIIS

Miles Thomas DeCotiis was born in Madison, Wisconsin on January 12, 1971 to Sue Chapin DeCotiis and Tom DeCotiis. Miles life ended in an auto accident May 9, 2008 in Thornton, Colorado.
Miles grew up in Ithaca and Jacksonville, NY, enjoying the wide variety of activities offered in this area. As a child he thrived participating in dance, music, theatre, sports and outdoor-nature adventures such as Outward Bound. As an adult he pursued a life that kept him in touch with the beauty of nature and the thrill of backcountry snowboard-ing, river rafting and hiking. His love of music was also a powerful source of inspiration, comfort and joy.
He earned a B.A. in Sociology/Human Services from Fort Lewis College, Durango, CO and was exploring options for graduate study at the time of his death.
What a joyous man! Miles was passionately loved; his boyish charm inspired playful affection from his family and friends. His wonderful sense of humor, sensitive presence, and kind-hearted, gentle spirit was a gift to all who knew him.
Miles will be deeply missed by his mother, Sue Chapin DeCotiis of Jacksonville; father and step-mother, Tom and Marta Erhard DeCotiis of Colorado Springs, CO; sister, Meredith DeCotiis Szypula, brother-in-law, John Szypula and niece and nephew, Aine Lucia and Lucas of Colorado Springs, CO; as well as relatives in San Diego, CA: uncle, Dick Chapin; aunt and uncle, Toncha and Jim Campbell; cousins, Tamara, Kimberly and Jimmy; and Grandpa Al and Julie DeCotiis.

I seem to remember Miles several time a year, especially since I drive through Jacksonville many times in all seasons. He was my dear friend who helped me learn songs on guitar and was always quick to laugh and share food. I’ll always miss his lively spirit and I think he’s in a better place.

What a kind and gentle soul. On guitar, he taught me the chords for Little Wing, one of the first songs I figured out how to play, and over the few years of our close friendship, I think we learned from each other. I'll miss you, man. I first met Miles through Meredith, who was friends with my own big sis, Jennifer. Sue, you were so patient and sweet back then, even though we both chose bad hairstyles (in retrospect only, because in the mid 80's, the whole short-long/mullet look was rockin'). Miles gave me the gift of easy laughter, and an even deeper appreciation for food. I think and talk of him often, and now even more so. Much love and peace to all, --Tim

Milo,

We had a lot of good times and adventures following the Dead around, in Santa Cruz and Ithaca. I just found out about this and am very sad to hear that you are gone my friend. All of these years in Colorado and I haven't seen you since those days. I was in the Galapagos shortly after you passed away. I showed a group of tourists your 'seal of approval' and was thinking about you in that beautiful place.

I will miss you.

Wherever you are my firend, I know they are singing and inspired by your presence. I was, I am, and always will be.

Love,

Your fried freckled friend,

Karl

I remember babysitting for this little blonde headed boy named Miles when I lived in Jacksonville years ago. I am not surprised to hear what a wonderful young man he grew up to be. I send my heartfelt condolences to all of Miles' loved ones.

I sorry to see the loss of such a young man. I didn't know him, But I was a classmate of his sister, Meredith DeCotiis Szypula & I know what a great person she is.. so I can only think that this young man was cut of the same cloth. My sincerest condolences go out to his entire family.
