Harold Teeter Obituary

HAROLD L. TEETER
TRUMANSBURG - Harold L. Teeter of 55 E. Main Street, Trumansburg, passed away at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester on Monday, June 23, 2008, at the age of 81.
The son of Harold Teeter and Ruth Roe, Harry was born at home on May 18, 1927, and when the midwife spanked him, he never cried - he just began to sing, and he's been singing ever since. In his teen years he sang and played drums in several local combos while also calling square dances around the T-Burg area. He was known to sing at the drop of a hat, particularly if an adult beverage was involved ("Manhattan, please, a bit sweet, with just a touch of cherry juice"). At almost any gathering if a hat was dropped, he started singing, and if you were anywhere in the vicinity, you could hear anything from "Sentimental Journey" to "Hey Good Lookin" to "Satisfaction".
Harry graduated high school in 1945, but his mother had to receive his diploma for him because he had already enlisted in the Navy where he would serve aboard the USS Tarawa until the end of WWII. After his discharge he returned to the states and married the love of his life, Freda Frost, on April 5, 1947. ("I was calling a square dance and couldn't take my eyes off her; she was the prettiest girl I'd ever seen.") That union prospered (in spite of the birth of two rather troublesome sons) for the next 61 years.
Following a couple of years at Ithaca College, Harry began his career as a successful local business owner. He succeeded at his several entrepreneurial ventures, not only because of his business acumen, but also because of his hard work and the belief that since most people are honest and trustworthy, the business owner must also operate with the same integrity.
Harry was a member of the Trumansburg Senior Citizens, Trumansburg American Legion Post 770, also the Moose, Elks and VFW, both here and in Florida. But this was only a small part of his ever increasing circle of friends.
The family would like to thank all the wonderful folks in the immediate area, the people in St. Croix, the group on Pine Island (little T-Burg) and all of the other caring people that Freda and Harry met in their world travels. A special heart-felt appreciation goes out to "The best friends and neighbors a man could have", Barb and Joe Lockwood.
Harry is survived by his wife, Freda of Clare Bridge of Ithaca; sons, Michael (Deborah Nottke) of Trumansburg, and Scott of Rockwood, TN; grandchildren, Jessica Teeter of Sarasota, FL, Billi Jo Starr of Santa Barbara, CA, Kym (Eric) Jackson of Lansing, NY, Stevey MacCheyne of Brooklyn, NY, Vanessa Willard of Trumansburg, NY, Ben Willard of Boynton Beach, FL, and Mike Willard of Trumansburg, NY. Harry is also survived by his sisters, Helen (Keith) VanDerzee of Trumansburg, NY, and Margaret Fait of Great Barrington, VT; and brothers, Donald (Velma) Teeter of Ithaca, NY, and Philip Teeter of Lusay, MD.
In addition to his parents, Harry was predeceased by a brother, Richard Teeter and a sister, Harriet Gunning.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Harry at the American Legion Post #770 in Trumansburg on Sunday, June 29, 2008, from 3-6 p.m. The family asks that friends dress casually and bring a hearty appetite, a powerful thirst, a big smile and maybe a hat to drop - you just might hear someone singing!
Because Harry always felt that you had an obligation to the generations that follow you, and he so much wanted to give back to the community that was so good to him, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Harry in the form of a contribution, kindly consider the Harold L. Teeter Memorial Fund, C/O Tompkins Trust Company, Main St., Trumansburg, NY. Contributions will be used for the establishment of a youth/community center.
To further honor the memory of a good man: open that special bottle of wine - go out to dinner and order the lobster - bet a buck on the bob-tailed nag - go fishing - listen to live music - sing and dance. LIVE...AND LET LIVE.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, Trumansburg. 1-888-534-5446

What a wonderful man who knew how to live a life filled with joy, music and love! Harry taught me, among other things, how to whistle, dance and to waterski over the 40+ years. I have such fond memories of bonfires, picnics, boat rides, vacations in St. Croix and Florida and many 4th of Julys together!
Much love Scott, Mik and Freda.
Rest in Peace Sweet Harry,

To Mickey & family-- A mutual friend called our attention to your dad's obituary, and it was a real pleasure to read such an interesting, heartfelt essay about an obviously vivid, joyful man. I had a vague memory of him in the liquor store, but now we have a real picture of a person who connected with the folks around him in a meaningful, memorable way. Thanks and our best to you!

I will miss knowing I can't just pop in to say hello to Harry any more. The last time I stopped at the apartment was with my sister Pam, to invite Harry to our family reunion. After all, we grew up feeling Harry & Freda were a part of our family and we never lost that connection. When we left that day, Harry said "thank you so much for stopping by, you really don't know how much it means to me". As we walked out to the car we both said, "I don't know if we made his day or he made ours". It was just one of those warm, fuzzy moments you know. I feel so blessed to have been able to spend the afternoon with Harry & Freda on June 7th. Harry was someone who always greeted everyone with a smile that could light up a room! I will miss him very much. My thoughts are with all of Harrys family. I will see you at the Legion on Sunday.

...and so Harry;
So glad you and Freida were able to make it over to our family reunion earlier this month. So good to see you, Freida, and Mom together smiling, singing, and doing lifes dance one more time...and so Harry,
that's how we folks all remembered it. You never skipped a beat in lifes journey...always a full glass...never empty...a true friend...the kind you can only count on one hand, yet your spirit resides in so many hearts. We are so thankful you became a part of our lives...and so Harry, we will gather this Sunday to be with you again in our hearts.

Harry was one of the most extraordinary people I have ever met. No wonder my Dad and Mom loved him so much. I can't tell you how glad I am that I went to visit him when I was up in early June, and that he came to our reunion/birthday for Mom. I have two really good pictures of Harry and Freda at the party. I told him that I was glad to see he had his bride on his arm that day, and he said, "Isn't she beautiful?!" What a beautiful life well lived. We will all miss him very much. Love, Pam

Harry was the first parent of a friend of mine I ever knew who wanted to have as much fun has we did. I still have never told Freda. A saw him a couple of weeks ago, and I don't know if he recognized me but he had a smile on his face. That was Harry.

I am a volunteer at Alterra and feel so fortunate that Harry came into my life. He will always hold a special place in my heart. I can't begin to describe the sadness I feel at this time. He was so kind, caring and compassionate. To his family; my thoughts are with all of you during this most difficult time.

Freda, Mick, Scott et al,,,
As the above great obit well-told, Harry was a stand-up guy, and a true friend to the many who were privileged to know him. He will be missed by many.
One of his many wonderful attributes was his tolerance of different others--something needed by us all, especially today.
Proof of that tolerance, was that he didn't disown/kick-out his sons when they were in their 'formative' years, and raising hell in a fashion few other parents of the time would or could find amusing. Those were the days, my friends; we thought they'd never end--yet they have--for Harry at least.
It is a sure bet--that his memory will live on in joy wherever fun is being had, and those who knew Harry still have their memories.
What a guy!!! I for one of many, will miss him.
