ERNEST WILLIAM
von BORSTEL
SPENCER - Ernest William von Borstel, 69, of Spencer, NY, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 12, 2008, at home after a three-year battle against multiple myeloma.
He is survived by his wife, Yoko von Borstel; and daughter, Emily; his sons, Steven (Janis) von Borstel of Preble, NY; and Douglas (Noreen) von Borstel of Massena; his brother, Edwin (Marlene) von Borstel of Santa Rosa, CA; two grandsons, two nephews, and a niece.
Ernie was born in the Bronx, NY on October 26, 1938, son of Edwin and Emma von Borstel. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1953 and received a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering in 1956 from Cornell, and later an MBA, also from Cornell. Ernie's employment included General Electric, Cornell's Wilson Synchrotron, then becoming an independent computer consultant and lecturer at TC3, BOCES and Cornell University. During his many years in Ithaca and, since his retirement at age 55, Ernie was involved in numerous organizations and community groups. He was once an active member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, the Ellis Hollow Community Center, and the Finger Lakes Beekeepers Club. Ernie served on the committees at Spencer-VanEtten School District and was a dedicated member and chairman of the Spencer Town Planning Board. He acquired a passion for woodlot management and enjoyed time spent in the woods, as well as around his property working on various projects. Ernie was a devoted husband, a loving father, and to many, a sincere friend, well-known for his warm smile.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at Christ the King Fellowship (Presbyterian) of Spencer, Pastor Priscilla Andrews officiating. Luncheon and a private interment will follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift to Christ the King Fellowship, 75 N. Main Street, Spencer, NY 14883.
