Carl Pancaldo Obituary

CARL EUGENE PANCALDO
On Friday morning, Carl Eugene Pancaldo died peacefully at home. He and his family hoped that our 45-year long tradition of celebrating his birthday and the birthdays of other family members together in Great Barrington, Massachusetts would continue this October. He would have been 87 years old.
Carl was a gentle, self-contained creative man. His life centered around his family, his work as an architect and his passion for building. Young Carl built box cars, secret meeting houses and electrical wonders, as well as a kayak and a 16-foot sail boat. He built an elegant music cabinet for his wife's large collection of chamber music. Tables appeared miraculously out of his workshop whenever they were needed.
Carl was born in New York and never lost his New York accent. He studied industrial design at Cooper Union before serving the army. In 1948, he graduated from the Harvard School of Architecture. His architectural career in New York City centered around design and construction of hospitals as well as houses. When is family moved to Ithaca in 1972 he commuted from New York for the following ten years.
We will always remember Carl as a loving father and brother who could build or fix anything. He passed on his remarkable love of nature, music and art to his four daughters and to his nieces and nephews. In his later years, he spent many happy hours reading books about American history. He delighted in discussing them with friends and relatives.
Carl is survived by his wife, four daughters, two sisters and four grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by many loving relatives.
In celebration of Carl's life, we welcome friends and relatives at our house, 101 Devon Road, on Friday, September 19, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Dear Pancaldo Family and Friends,
I first met Carl when I was 26 years old! He taught me the proper way to eat spaghetti after I innocently began chopping it up with a knife and fork! He and his wife had loving labored over the perfect sauce and al dente pasta. I joyfully looked on as they did their "cooking together dance" in the small kitchen of a mutual friends vacation condo in Aspen, Colorado. They produced one of the most delicious and joyful meals of my life! The friendly banter, much laughter, commarderie, celebration of life, and joy of being with friends new and old made that night one to remember! I have never forgotten and never shall...Carl was the instigator and facilitator of so much joy for so many of us. For me, this gift and the wonderful memories will keep him in that position in my heart.
May all who adore him find solace and peace in the days to come....
My deepest sympathy,
Laurie (Giorgi) Upton

I only knew Carl for a little while in the 70's, but he was a very nice man, and it was a pleasure to know him. He will be missed. My condolences to his family.
