Robert Brown Obituary

ROBERT A. BROWN
GROTON - Robert A. Brown, 87, of Cortland Rd., Groton, died September 23, 2008, at the Groton Nursing Facility after an extended illness.
Born December 6, 1920 in Chicago, IL, he was the son of the late Alexander and Jennie Scoville Brown.
Having graduated in 1939 from Groton Central School, he had started a dairy farm, which is known as Shiphrah Farms today. He had been involved in the community where he had served on the school board for 17 years, the McLean Fire District board, Election Inspector for McLean District, as well as a zoning officer for Groton. He was involved with the NYS Grange and had been a loyal and faithful member for 72 years with the Groton City Church where he had served in the capacity of Officer, Deacon, Trustee, Sunday school teacher, Executive Council, Choir member and fill in Pastor. Bob will be remembered for his wonderful gift to sing which he shared at weddings and social gatherings.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Betty; his children, Barbara (Steve) Pelham of Hickory, NC, David (Joan) Brown of Hayes, KS, Tom (Sally) Brown of Groton, Marge (Steve) Williams of Locke, and Roberta Brown of Dodge City, KS; 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. His children, Steve, James and Catherine, predeceased him.
A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, September 30, at 11:00 a.m. at the Groton City Church. The family will receive friends Monday evening, 6-8:00 p.m. at the Zirbel Funeral Home, 115 Williams St., Groton. Interment will be in the Groton Rural Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Groton City Church or to Hospicare, 172 E. King Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850.
