Alice Browne Obituary

ALICE W. BROWNE
ITHACA - Alice W. Browne died peacefully in her sleep at Oak Hill Manor on October 23, 2008. She was born Alice Elizabeth Whalen in Ithaca on July 6, 1915, the daughter of Jeremiah J. and Ellen Walsh Whalen. She attended Immaculate Conception School and was a 1933 graduate of Ithaca High School, where she was captain of the girls' basketball team and voted "most athletic".
Alice was married to Robert L. Browne for 48 years until his death in 1984. She is survived by their children, Richard M. Browne (Conchita) of West Chester, PA, David A. Browne (Joy Fillman) of Novato, CA, and Susan B. Williams (Bill Petrillose) of Ithaca; grandchildren, Connie Browne (Hans) Jorgensen of Atlanta, Caitlin and Jesse Browne of Novato, CA, and Stacy Williams of Boston.
She is also survived by her brother, Robert M. (Claire) Whalen of Poughkeepsie; sister-in-law, Jo Whalen of Bonifay, Florida; a beloved niece and several nephews and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two brothers, John J. Whalen and Edward M. Whalen.
Alice worked at GLF (later Agway) when it was headquartered in Ithaca, and at Cornell University until her retirement in 1978. She enjoyed traveling, reading, watching vintage movies, and being involved in projects around her home. She had a good sense of humor, and particularly enjoyed going out with friends and family. She took care of her parents and husband during their illnesses, and was nurturing and supportive of other family members.
Alice was a lifelong communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church. A Catholic mass was held Monday, October 26, at the home of her son, Richard Browne, in West Chester, PA. She was buried in Calvary Cemetery with her husband and parents.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful people at Oak Hill Manor who caringly tended to her every need for the last 7 months of her life. Alice will be missed by her family, friends, and the many whose lives she touched over the years. May she rest in peace.

Sue,

Hard to believe how much time has passed, we graduated from IHS 45 years ago.

But I sure have fond memories of us, great 2nd grade pals when I lived at 108 Water Street. Your Mom was so nice to us, spent alot of time at your home on Treva Ave.

Dear Susan,

Ann Argetsinger contacted me to tell me of your loss. I am so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. I have been living in NC for 12 yrs and do not know what is happening in Ithaca, except for Ann.

I know this must be a very difficult time for you but would love to be in touch. We shared some very special memories and would like to rekindle our friendship.

Love, Marilyn Holtham

I have fond memories of Alice Browne. As grade school children, Susan and I used to walk up the State Street hill after school past Andrews' confectionary stop (stopping for a cherry coke, of course) and then up the hill to Susan's house. We were always greeted by Mrs. Brown. She was always so sweet to us. And seemed like such a gentle, quiet woman. I could'n't imagine her ever raising her voice to her kids. I'm sure she will be missed by her family.

To Alice's Family, Our family over the last ten years came to the conclusion Alice had passed away a long time ago through searches we had made. We are in the Lansing area and are leaving and would like to extend to the family our condolences and the fact that we valued her friendship and that of the family's. We have lived in Tampa, FL for many years and just return to this area every few years but originally had been away for 30 years. We would have liked very much to have visited Alice. We haven't found the more detailed funeral notice yet. Love from us, Richard and Dorinda Davison and Family
