Dar Aunt Vi, Patty & Mark,
Im so sorry for yor loss. I will always remember The times we would visit when I was a little girl, like The Time Patty and I dressed up in Aunt Vi's beautiful dresses and shoes. Or we would walk to the park. And I'll never forget the wonderful time we all had at the family reunion. Uncle Leo always spoke with such a soft voice and always had a smile. I remember your kindness when My daddy Passed away. I dont know what I would have done with out your help and love. My first thought when I was told about Leo's passing was
"Man, won't Daddy be suprized to see Uncle Leo?"
I love all of you and you are always in my prayers.

Dear Vi and family,
I was saddened to hear at Mass today that Leo had died. I don't get the paper and so did not know before this.
I will miss seeing Leo at Wegman's getting coffee or doing the weekly shopping with you. He always had a smile on his face.
We had a good friendship that started during daily mass ten years ago and continued until the chemo kept him home. I will miss the yearly hockey tickets he would give me and my family only because I will miss his kindness more.
God bless you and keep you safe today and bring peace to your hearts.
Sincerely,
Susan and Vince Lynch

My late husband and I became friends of Vi and Leo way back in the early 1950's and we used to do a lot of things together. Our children played together. As happens, our lives diverged and we didn't see as much of each other until Leo and I found ourselves bowling in the same league. What fun times we had then. Strangely enough, Dick and Leo were both in the 4th Marine Division and both were on Iwo Jima at the same time but didn't realize it until years later when they were asked to participate on a radio talk show.
I offer my sincere sympathy to Vi and family. Vi, I know exactly what you are going through but you are a strong person and will make it. Think of all the good memories. Barb Exton

Leon ‘Mush’ Maliski
This is an odd story about an enduring friendship and a nice guy. It all started in September 1938 when my family moved to Ithaca and I entered the fifth grade at the Immaculate Conception School. Only two guys took the time to say ‘welcome’; one was Dick Herson who was a seventh grader and the other was ‘Mush’ Maliski who was a class mate. Both became my friends and we remained oddly connected for the rest of our lives. During WWII, Leo joined the marines and in 1945 I was told that he had been killed on Iwo Jima. This quiet, unpretentious man with the shy smile and the caring heart had joined an array of other guys who had also died too soon.
For the next 57 years Leo’s name was included on the list I recited while waiting in line to receive Communion at Mass. Then, in 2002, when Dick Herson died, I was amazed (and delighted) to see Leon up on the altar serving Dick’s Mass. When it came time for the eulogy, I walked over to his kneeler and we shook hands. “You owe me!” I whispered with a big grin on my face. Later that day we talked at length and I explained my stupid remark. Leo thought it was hilarious and promised to put Dick on his list of departed loved ones.
Now, after a hiatus of almost exactly five years, he’s back on my list although I’d bet there’s little need.

Leo was a hero to me. He returned from military service and went back to Ithaca High School as a real veteran of war. He was in some of my classes as I was still in high school. I will always be proud of his gift to all of us. Bob McKaig,Hurst,Texas.
