Gladys Woolever Obituary

GLADYS MAY HAMMOND WOOLEVER
CORTLAND - Gladys May Hammond Woolever, age 94, of 1011 West State Road, (Town of Virgil) Cortland, NY, died Thursday, October 25, 2007, at the Cayuga Medical Center, Ithaca, NY. Gladys was born November 13, 1912 on Owego Hill in Harford, NY, to the late Francis and Nellie Kimmich Hammond. Her husband, Charles N. Woolever died December 1, 1969. She was a very accomplished artist, cake decorator, nurturer, cook, bread baker, and a friend to all. She always claimed she liked everybody. There wasn't a child in the family that didn't receive her special love. Just last week she held her great-great-niece. Gladys was a former member of Clover Rebekah Lodge, the Harford Mills Grange, Home Bureau and the Virgil Methodist Church. She was known to many as "Aunt Gladys", "Gramma Gladys", "Glady" to some and to a few she was "Gramma Lever". Although Gladys never had her own children she lovingly raised her niece, Ruby Hammond Clark. In 2003, fifteen of her paintings were displayed at the Dryden Historical Society.
Survivors include her family members, Mary Hammond, Ruby and Jim Clark, Wanita Baldwin, Leonard and Eleanor Hammond, Jim and Barbara Hammond, Gordon Hammond, Margaret Hammond, David Hammond, Michael and Brenda Hammond, Thomas and Eileen Hammond, Gail and Robbie Metzler, Barbara and Fred Aichele, Stanley and Barb Woolever, Charlie and Pat Dillon, Mike Hammond, II, Charlie Clark and Kristen Clark, as well as several great and great-great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her bothers, Burch W. Hammond and Norris R. Hammond, and her sister-in-law, Lois Hammond.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, October 30, 2007, at the Perkins Funeral Home with Rev. Lawrence E. Walter, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Virgil Rural Cemetery. Friends are invited to call Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, 55 West Main St., Dryden, NY. Those wishing to remember Gladys are asked to consider a memorial to the Virgil Fire Dept. Rescue Squad, 1195 West State Rd., Cortland, NY 13045.
