ALBERT "AL" J.
BASSO JR.
GROTON - Albert "Al" J. Basso Jr., 77, of Cayuga St., Groton, passed away October 31, 2007 at the Groton Nursing Facility.
Born July 24, 1930 in Garden City, NJ, he was the son of the late Albert and Esther Balletto.
Having been a resident of the region, he graduated from Genoa Central, followed by his enlistment into the Marine Corps, serving his country during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning, he became employed with the Local 281 Carpenter's Union in Ithaca, retiring after 50 years of service. He was also co-owner along with his wife, Nan, of the Groton 5 & 10 and Mill Race Antiques in Groton.
He had been a member of the Carrington-Fuller Post 800 American Legion in Groton and the Moravia VFW Post 7157 as well as a member of the Groton Fire Dept. He was famous for his chicken barbeques and his passion was flying his airplane in which he piloted friends and family to many places for fly-in breakfasts.
Al is survived by his loving wife, Nan Webber Basso, at home; his children, Michael F. Basso, Albert (John) Basso III, Roy A. Webber, Carol A. Bruce and Darlene M. Reynolds; a brother, Robert H. Basso; his grandchildren, Angela Ayers, Kimberly Travis, Arthur Basso, Cathy Auge, Dani Bruce, David (Scott) Reynolds, Adam Webber and Rebecca Webber; five great-grandchildren; and his brothers-in-law, William Rennie and John Rennie.
Al was predeceased by his first wife, Bettie Hettis.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 5, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at the Zirbel Funeral Home, 115 Williams Street, Groton, with Pastor Sam Neno officiating. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow in Groton Rural Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cortland County SPCA, 879 McLean Road, Cortland, NY 13045; or to the Groton Fire and Ambulance Dept., PO Box 100, Groton, NY 13073.
