Clinton Spahn Obituary

CLINTON EDWARD SPAHN
ROCKY MOUNT, NC - Clinton Edward Spahn passed away on Friday, November 23, 2007 while a resident of the Fountains at the Albemarle in Tarboro at age 89.
Born in Norfolk, VA, on March 25, 1918, he was the son of the late George J. Spahn and Marguerite Hoeck Spahn and was the husband of the late Evelyn Elizabeth Laurer Spahn, who passed away on June 21, 2007.
He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Eileen Spahn Williams and Don Williams of Rocky Mount, NC, daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Spahn Cove and Andrew Cove of Ithaca, NY. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George J. Spahn, Jr. of Sunrise, FL; by his sisters, Margaret S. Barber of Richmond VA, Catherine S. Jenson of Lake Mary, FL; and by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph O'Brien of Suffolk, VA, and Mr. and Mrs. Paul McClintock of Atlanta, GA. His brother, William J. Spahn, preceded him in death. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Gladys Laurer Jenkins of Southern Shores, NC.
Surviving grandchildren are Clinton C. Williams and his wife, Allison of Nashville, NC, G.E. Reeves Williams and his wife, Margarette of Clayton, NC, Gwyneth M. Diemand and her husband, Chris, Annan Michelle Montgomery and Richard Brennen Montgomery, all of Ithaca. NY; three great-granddaughters also survive: Bailey G. Williams and Bethany C. Williams of Nashville, NC, and Avery Elizabeth Williams of Clayton, NC.
Clinton Spahn was a business and civic leader for many years in Chesapeake, VA. He attended the College of William & Mary and served in World War II as a Merchant Marine Engineer Officer on ships in both Europe and Asia. He also served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy Reserve. He held an unlimited Marine Engineering License and completed many advanced courses in engineering and business. He was involved in the shipyard industry of Hampton Roads for many years before founding Machine Services, Inc., a precision machine operation in Chesapeake, VA. He served as the company's president until his retirement to The Outer Banks in 1990. Afterwards he continued working with the company as a consultant for many years.
Clinton Spahn was active in many civic and charitable activities including serving as chairman of the Chesapeake Board of Zoning Appeals for over 20 years. He was also active in the Marine Engineer Beneficial Association, the Community Clubs of Chesapeake, the Chesapeake Chamber of Commerce and served on the National Board of Directors of United Cerebral Palsy.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Clinton Spahn has been tentatively scheduled for Saturday, December 29. 2007, in Rocky Mount, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Edgecombe HomeCare & Hospice, PO Box 100, Tarboro, NC 27886; or to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements by Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home, 1130 N. Winstead Ave., Rocky Mount, NC 27804.
