Happy Birthday, Carol. As I attended Midnight Mass last night all I could think of was seeing you there each year and wishing you a Happy Birthday...I could even tell you what pew you sat in! Although it has been nearly a month since you left us, I thought it was important to remember not only your birthday, but another side of you that not many of the other friends who posted knew...your faith and your dedication to our children (not only yours, but ours as well). As parents who had kids at Immaculate Conception School at the same time, Carol and I served as volunteers together in everything from auctions to parent advisory groups. Carol ALWAYS had the best interests of the children at heart, and went above and beyond what any volunteer was asked to do to make sure that our school had our full support. Thank you, Carol, for giving so unselfishly for so many!!! I will never forget those days...great fun and hard work, all with a united purpose of loving our kids and showing them how important it is to do such things. You were first class, Carol, and I will never forget you!

Carol was the person to turn to for a welcome smile and a helping hand. I worked with Carol on and off for about 5 years when I filmed a cable TV show at Wegmans, "Whats Cookin'?' Without Carol's support and assistance, that show would not have happened. Whether preparing ingredients for each show, providing cooking tips to me and the 'guest chef,' or simply offering great advice, Carol was always there for us. But more important than her advice and assistance was here very presence AS CAROL. In the years after that show, she and I would chat from time to time, and it was always great to see her and to again have the benefit of her smile and knowing look. I know that I speak for everyone involved with that show—as well as countless others—when I say that her presence will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Sarah and I will miss your mom. Sarah remembers her from Immaculate Conception school as a volunteer parent. I will remember her from Wegman's. I used to see her quite a bit when I would shop. She always had time for me. God bless and keep you both safe today. I know you will miss your mom very much.

Carol, you'll be missed by so many people as you touched so many lives. I will surely miss your energetic spirit and generous heart. I met Carol when I first started working at Ithaca Wegmans as a cashier. We would talk as I checked out her groceries and the next thing I knew she took me under her wing; letting me help in so many aspects of her culinary school program--so much fun, and so much laughter with someone who knew more about food than the whole research team at food network tv. When I left Ithaca to pursue graduate school, Carol took me to "Just a Taste" at the Commons, and also offered to write a recommendation letter; things she did not have to do, and that I'll never forget. Carol loved the theater and could talk about plays forever. She also studied acting with Randolph Mantooth (of 'Emergency"), and hearing about all her experiences and travels around the world were so inspiring . My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and her two precious sons.

I met Carol several years ago at a culinary conference and was immediately drawn to her friendly personality. Her knowledge of food & wine was of course signficant, but more impressive was her curiousity to always keep learning so she could pass her knowledge on to others. My deepest sympathies to Carol's family.

Hey there, Carol-- Gonna miss you a lot. Whenever I was lucky enough to get into to Ithaca for a film or some food, I always thoughts of you and the fun we had in the Culinary School. My friend would pick on me because a few million times I pointed out your house on Plain Street. "That's where Carol lives," I'd say each and every time. I refuse to be sad over you leaving this week; you'd not have wanted me to be sad. You'd have wanted me to laugh at our Culinary School behind-the-scenes blunders that turned out delicious and at the stories about our trip to Phoenix for the IACP conference in '99. (Somewhere I have a picture of us wearing sombreros at that great southwest cookout.) You were dedicated enough to your craft to schmooze culinary folks until all hours, while I took the easier path and went to the Diamondbacks/Dodgers game. I found a photo the other day from Katie's wedding when a bunch of us were gathered in close. You were 20-30 years older than us, but it never mattered; you were able to hit any conversation running, and you just always fit in. I still have Mark Bittman's cookbook, the one you sent me signed to me by him. I never gave the un-signed one back because it became the one thing that tethered you and me to each other and to our time together at Wegmans and all the fun and laughter (and occasional frustration) we shared. No way will I mourn you, Carol (okay, sure, yes, I'm crying as I write this), but instead I'll think of that meaningful and important hug you always gave me when I walked into your Ithaca Wegmans. I thought recently that I needed to make the time to get to one of your classes. And I still will. Sure, it'll be different now, but that Carol Doty influence will always be there. And whenever anyone mentions the 70s TV show "Emergency," I'll think of you. When you told me you acted in summerstock in California back in the late 60s with Randloph Mantooth, I was a Carol Doty fan for life. I was so impressed! Plus you knew him as "Randy"! Wow! I mean, that's John Gage, my hero from my childhood, and you knew him! As Randy! So very cool. I'll be certain to write a story about you soon. I'm not sure yet how you'll influence it or how it'll be about you, but I'll dedicate it to you and I'll get it to you once it's published. This morning I was in a hot bath trying get the kink out of my back, and I was reading a cool short story you'd have liked; several things in it reminded me of you. I had a little cold coffee (another Carol connection for me) remaining in my mug, so I poured it into my bath water. That small amount of brown liquid stayed in the large tub of water and just moved around and, after a while, altered the color of the water just enough to make an overall, unchangeable difference. You are one of the people in my life who has changed forever the color of my water. I'll miss you, but I promise I'll always smile and be happy when I think of you. Thanks for being in my life and teaching me about food and how to get a little extra in the overhead compartment on the way home from Arizona. Rest in peace, Carol, and I'm hanging on this damn cookbook because I want to always know I have two of them side by side for a reason. Love & food, Joel.

Five years ago we started spending our summers in Ithaca and I took my first Wegmans cooking class and met Carol Doty. From the beginning I knew she was one special lady. Her attention to detail and her knowlege of food, ingredients were amazing. Thank you Carol for all that I learned from you. You will be deeply missed.

It was such a pleasure to teach for Carol. She had such wonderful ideas, paid attention to every detail, and went out of her way to provide so much for her students. She will be sorely missed.

In My Pocket
I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.
My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.
They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.
Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.
But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

I have enjoyed my 3 1/2 years working with Carol. She had so many wonderful ideas and helped so much in merchandising the store at certain times of the year. She did a wonderful job coordinating the Culinary School at the store and how detailed she was. She will be sadly missed. I extend my deepest sympathy to the family at this time.

There are so many great things to say about Carol. Her love of life and how she approached it was like hooking onto a fireball and hoping you could hang onto it so you too could enjoy the ride with her. She was an amazing food and wine person, that enjoyed every aspect of that game.. I was very happy when she told me she could take over the seat I vacated on the Ithaca Taste of the Nation. She grabbed ahold of that committee and took control like I knew she would. she did many many things under the radar to help her fellow human beings and for that the Ithaca community should give her a word of thanks. But more so because she was the best kind of person, she was the best kind of friend, she was there when she was needed. I love you Carol, This world is minus one little firecracker that was one of my brightest stars in the sky. I will miss you very very much, as will so many others.
